  • Harlots - SPOILERS

I held out on the last 3 episodes because I was worried Nancy would die, but when she didn't, I finally caught up. WOW, the number of coincidental popups and convenient crossings of character has reached utterly ludicrous levels. The show was never like this before! The speed at which Lydia Quigley pops in and out of people's offices and overhears everything, sees everything, etc. is pathetically comical. I literally started laughing at one point, but not for enjoyment. What are they thinking!?!? A tragic assassination of a formerly clever show. As people kept asking if Lucy suffered enough, perhaps they should have asked the writers the same thing, although it is mostly sympathy for the Wells family I feel, because Lucy is still such a shallow character.

As the show slowly spirals to its death, I'm going to need them to keep the makeup off the so-called prince. He's almost interesting without it.

Coming back a year later has been disorienting, even though I was binging up to this point and finally caught up with the live show. I was happy to see Mags' husband was John Lynch--I've enjoyed seeing him pop up in things since 1995 in Roan Inish, then The Fall, and of course The Terror. Shame he has to do an American accent though :)

Absolutely gutted losing such a magnetic, bright character in Charlotte, willingly or not. And I'm so upset for Lady Fitz, who's finally rising above it and loses yet again, while her brother continues to be the absolute most wretched with no censure.

I agree that Lydia looks bizarrely needy and foolhardy at times, especially with such an inexperienced pawn. I do think she's losing it a little, and I loved the house of her "mentor" falling into her hands. But frankly I'm annoyed that she's managed to get her foot in the door of Golden Square AGAIN, and find out that Maggie is still alive that easily and quickly. UGH. I wasn't under any illusions that she'd learn or change, but somehow she stays winning.

Last thought--Justice Knox is fire and reminds me a bit of Jonathan Tucker.

  • Sharp Objects Ep. 5 - "Closer"

Just listening to the podcast and I thought for certain that Amma ran because she was angry that nobody was looking at her anymore. She got more and more resentful that Camille wasn't looking at her. As soon as the fight whipped up and it was ruining her big moment, she got antsy, and when she saw her mom turn away, she snapped and ran. This way, not only is her family punished by worrying over her, the entire town is looking for and thinking of her. She attempted to turn the attention back to herself in several small ways this episode and prior, leading up to the event, and this was her coup de grace.
The Amma-as-baby-narcissist theory is interesting to me, because I've heard at least 1 psychologist claim that it isn't possible for 2 narcissists to tolerate each other. I'm not sure about this. Perhaps the show is saying that Amma and Adora are skilful enough manipulators that they can dance around each other.
I've known families where there is a parent narcissist and a child narcissist along with other various children who rotate through the scapegoat position. It can definitely be done within a family with that codependency from birth built in. You just have to take turns at being primary while the other serves as hype man/enforcer. It's narcissists in equal positions that have the most difficulty tolerating each other.

  • SPOILER GRRM Regrets

It's difficult to know who it could be without also knowing at what point he said that in his writing process. Killed like, it was already at the printers, or killed like it's in his outline and he can't figure out a way around it? The best I can find is "a few years ago," but he's been "working" on TWOW since 2011. It could easily be someone in that novel, which doesn't narrow it down at all. Maybe he kills someone at the beginning and realizes he needs that person at the end, but now he's written 1000 pages without them. Victarion? Benjen? (haha)

I was amused to read his complaint that he's again painted himself into a corner. Oh George.
