Also, tell me what you liked about the first one.

Fear Street 2: 1978 So much better than the first one! It’s not high art - it’s a by-the-numbers summer camp slasher movie - but it’s still fun, and helped a lot by having Sadie Sink as the lead rather than the obnoxious final girl from the first film. The third one (released next weekend) is the origin story set in 1666, and I have zero interest in Ye Olde Timey Witche stories, but I’ll still watch it just to complete the trilogy.
Love you BM Mother @Dee , that said TBH I didn’t agree with your take on the 1st one but I think that’s a generational thing and I think /slash know you had a hang up on the main girl, but I’m excited to see ‘78, especially after your thoughts here. I’m on vakay so all I want to do right now is do vakay shit, drink, sleep, repeat, but now I’m super excited to watch this. Why no love for Ye Olde Timey? I love old witch times like Warlock etc.
Funny you say that because I'm assuming you're closer to my age (I'm an older millennial although I associate much closer to Gen x than millennials) and I agree with Dee's take on both. 1st was meh other than the soundtrack and the 2nd was decent and helped greatly by Sadie Sink. I really hope she doesn't get typecast in this kind of rebellious type role for everything she's in. She plays the part extremely well but I feel actors/actresses that get typecast like that fall off the radar real quick.

Man, do I have a weird selection of movies:

Bo Burnham's Inside: Really fantastic. The discourse around this thing is warranted, but probably over-hyping it and leading to disappointment. Well worth a look, but keep expectations in check, for no other reason than to give this thing a fair shot. (Netflix

Shiva Baby: Man, this movie. It really should be listed as a horror film, because this is some anxiety-provoking, fear-inducing stuff. At 75-minutes, there is very little fat on the bones. It takes place over the course of a Shiva where the main character runs into someone she'd rather not see at a family gathering (HBOMax)

Saw 3D: I have systematically made my way through all the Saw movies, since they are on HBO. I mostly wanted to watch them to see how ridiculous the twists for the series eventually get. The last 10 minutes of each of these movies is where they "shine." I know I could have easily read or watched a Kill Count video or something. But god, this series sucks. I will say that they show a surprising amount of attention to detail, so they must have at least been planning ahead a tiny bit.

And Julian Sands, yes! Love that opening origin scene.

I thought the 90s nostalgia was spot on which was the main driver of fun for me. And I don’t think it’s a movie targeted for present day teens. I think it’s trying to be a big tent but I totally think it’s marketed to geriatric millennials and baby gen-Xers like me (born in 80). The set & props were spot on literally everywhere.  The hair and costume to me didn’t distract, especially the costume. Jean shirt, lots of plaid, lots of overalls, even overalls with one side undone, horizontal stripes, white T, jeans rolled up, lots of army boots, a chain wallet, no problem there. Hair, 2 actors with ethnic hair that’s cross generational, a cheerleader in a pony tail and a dude with “party in the front” bangs.

The few high school scenes were spooky accurate to the urban mid 90s high school experience. I think the criticism of speech patterns & attitudes kinda holds together, but you know what? We were kinda fucking annoying back then too. Very Party of Five. Back then I used to call it the Neve Campbell school of acting. It was stupid and contagious (Nirvana pun intended) cause it spread and then it felt like more were talking/acting that way. *cough* Jennifer Love Hewitt *cough*

I saw Scream 200 times back then cause I was a movie theater usher (glorified janitor) until an angel pulled me in to be with the arcade staff, so the 90s teen slasher nostalgia hit pretty good with me. What can I say, just overall entertaining and fun.

Nah, I can totally see it not being everyone's cup of tea. It definitely was a bit too naval gaze-y at times. But I also know people who have watched it four times and seem to act like it is the second coming...its not that good. I thought it was good, but it also took five different sittings to get through it. So I didn't love it enough to just be unable to pry my eyes away or something like that (unlike Shiva Baby, where I was just entranced by tension).
  • No Sudden Move

Latest Steven Soderbergh movie and it’s pretty god damn good. This dude continues to be the most productive and watchable director in the history of cinema.

This is the most prominent post-retirement career that anyone has ever had in Hollywood.
  • My wife and I checked out The Tomorrow War last night and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Very tense and engaging. I felt like there was more they could do with the concept. Kind of a pacing thing, but a conceptual one. Too much time on certain things and not enough exploration of the possibilities in other areas. I want to be vague so I don't spoil anything, but I wonder if anyone who has seen it knows what I mean. Anyway, feels nit picky to even get into it because I did really enjoy it. I was impressed by "the female lead from Chuck" whose actual name escapes me a couple of times. There was a moment or two where she hit a gear that I wasn't aware that she had.

She also has a major role in The Handmaid's Tale. I'm not 100% sure on what you're meaning but I have an idea. I thought the movie was pretty decent. It's certainly not perfect but I will admit, their sound mixing in regards to bass was perfect for me  :D

I've actually never seen The Handmaid's Tale. I'm certainly curious and I hope to someday, but it's kind of the same way that I've never watched Schindler's List. Despite knowing that it will be amazing in both quality and purpose,  I also know that I'm in for a super unhappy ride. I didn't know she was on it. Interesting. I only really know her from Chuck and Dexter.

In trying to super vaguely go a little further, I guess it's no big secret that time travel plays a major role (right there in the trailer) and I think that they way that they did the time travel leaves room for a lot of interesting possibilities if they had done more with it. I feel like they missed opportunities and that there were ways to reallocate their time to fit it in.

Fear Street pt 1 and 2 - These were fun and super watchable but not must watches or anything. There is some typical slasher dumbass character stuff you have to just kinda buy into with movies where the threat can't do anything but walk towards you. In part 1 the characters are all reckless little shits and I didn't have a ton of sympathy for them especially in the beginning, but they grew on me enough that when one got an axe to the face it was at least an "Ohhhh.... anyway,". Also, what is it with these movies and weird age gap romances? I can't quite tell what age they're supposed to be but it was unexpected and distracting, especially in the first movie with the younger brother.

Fear Street Part 3: 1666 As I suspected I would be, I was bored by the old timey witch story and fast forwarded through a lot of it (not least to escape the atrocious accent work). The second part in 1994 took us back to the obnoxious main character from the first movie, so although it was okay, and definitely better than the first half, I didn’t love it.

    All in all, I really enjoyed P2: 1978, and P1: 1994 and P3: 1666 were meh.

I think Jim mentioned Bandits when talking about Bruce Willis in the Baddasses podcast, and at the time I thought "yea, that was a good movie" ... fast forward to scrolling HBO Max tonight, and there it was, so I had to watch it. Holds up! Great performances all around but Cate Blanchette really stands out playing against Willis and Billy Bob, she's having fun - and it's crazy to think this movie came out the same year she was in Fellowship of the Ring as Galadriel.

A Quiet Place 2 - OK as a horror/action movie but not nearly as good as the first.  Suffered from some drawn out scenes where it was obvious what was going to happen.

No Sudden Move - Pretty good, moved quickly and the cast is completely stacked. You can probably tell if you're going to like it from the vibe in the trailer

The Empty Man - Weird but I think I loved this movie. The main character is kind of a lug head in a way that makes some scenes funnier then they probably should be. The movie starts off about an urban legend and moves into cults and the nature of consciousness and reality and whenever another character is explaining any of that to him he just goes "I GREW UP IN SAN FRANCISCO" and calls it all hippy bullshit and he does that like four or five times. This weirdly does sort of pay off at the very end of the movie.

Jackass Number Two - Still hilarious and watching it for the first time outside of high school it's still pretty shocking.

Space Jam 2 - Nonstop LeBron propaganda, the entire movie was made for LeBron's ego but if he has any shame at all it will be way too embarrassing to watch it.

Fear Street 1666 - This one made me like the other two more in retrospect. As a whole I really, really enjoyed the trilogy.

    LeBron James has no shame…

he interrupted his sons basketball game cuz he got mad at the announcer…

he also has “the chosen one” tattooed on his back..

Problems with becoming “the king” at 14.

space jam 2 is probably on all 23 TV screens at his house…

Space Jam 3 should just be LeBron and Jordan playing one on one for the rights to all of Warner Bros.

Just got back from seeing Snake Eyes and what a mess. I thought maybe having Andrew Koji and Iko Uwais involved that it might be at least decent but they couldn't even bring this movie into decent status. They brought in quality martial artists but resorted to such quick cuts and shaky cam that you can't even comprehend what's going on.

That is super disappointing. I was really excited for this after watching Warrior and Iko is probably my favorite action star right now other than maybe Joe Taslim.

I went in skeptical just because of the GI Joe name behind it and knowing how the previous 2 were. But they brought in some great names. There were some decent action sequences but again they just relied too heavily on close ups, quick cuts, and shaky cam. Joe Taslim is someone I've been making it a point to go back and watch some of the things I hadn't seen him in.

Yup. After being disappointed with the new Mortal Kombat I went on a spree of solid Kung Fu movies and watched both Raid movies along with The Night Comes For Us.

  • Space Jam 2’s strategy for a good movie is “let’s throw a gazillion references and cameos in from other WB/HBO properties so people will point at the screen excitedly instead of realise what garbage it is”

seriously it just seemed like 90 minutes of cutscenes. Hey there’s Rick and morty! In a kids movie! Awesome! Oh that’s bill belichexk! Now he’s the other popular coach!

Icetastrophe - A so bad it's amusing disaster film; good to watch in the summer.  A meteor lands in a small northern town and starts a growing freezing zone.  Much overly dramatic acting and bad special effects ensue.  I'd seen it before and it's just as I remember it.

Completely agree. 90 minute commercial for HBO Max. Terrible. Even my 7 year old liked the MJ one better.

  • Went and saw M Night Shyamalan's newest film Old in theaters yesterday and actually thought it was pretty decent. It's definitely a suspense/ figure out what's going on kind of movie that has what I thought was a very interesting and clever twist to it that makes you think a little bit more about it.

Plus there was a fair amount in the trailers that was not in the movie which I appreciate. I have a love/hate relationship with trailers. I can't help but get to the theater when the movie is scheduled to start to catch the trailers but it's becoming more and more common to give away more than I care to see in the trailers.

Curious to hear if anyone else has seen Old and what they thought?
  • Well it's been a theater kind of weekend for me. Just got back from seeing the newest Nicolas Cage film Pig. I really didn't know a thing about the film other than somebody stole his truffle hunting pig. I'm pleasantly surprised at how good of a movie that was and being a straight drama role that Cage nailed. Definitely recommend it.

Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage - I was vaguely aware of Woodstock 99 mostly just from seeing the lineup, I had no idea what it was actually like. This movie is horrifying and I can't imagine very many places I would like to be less than this nightmare of a festival. 500k overwhelmingly male Limp Bizkit and Metallica fans squeezed into an air force base that's mostly cement in 110 degree weather with basically no working facilities or available shade or water. I bet that Korn set was great though for anyone who wasn't passed out.
