WestWorld Location

I know you guys have been going back & forth with "is WestWorld a phyical location or is it VR. My first thought when watching the first episode was "Avatar!" I'm a mid level Sci-Fi fan. I've only saw "Avatar" once but didn't they go into a tube hooked up to computers & become part of that world?

Love all the podcast I follow, you are my gold standard! I cannot listen to other podcasts when it comes to my shows. One more question, what were the three shows you suggested we try out on the last podcast?

Thank you for all the insight & honesty some podcast are to "pc"

  • I predict the entire facility of Westworld is underground. Probably a mix of synthetic and virtual props. This is why the only way to travel there is by train.
  • I can't remember where I saw the Q&A with the show writers, but they discussed where the show was shot, but pointed out that that's not where Westworld is in the show. When pressed they mentioned something about "terraforming" which leads me to believe this is all off-world.

That would explain the "rotating out" comment by Lee, why there's no limit to the park, and why interlopers can't intrude from the outside.
  • Well, they have real flies, which makes me believe they are a real location on Earth as is not completely sealed off, but they don't have any other animals, so that would be an argument against this. It doesn't make much sense really.

So far, I am going off of assumption that this is an actual location, on Earth, possibly in the south west USA, or maybe Australia or some similar location. When they show the holographic model in the writers' room, that doesn't seem like that big of an area. It seems like it might be maybe 5-10 times the size of Disney World in Florida.

All this is just an impression of a casual viewer - I could very well be wrong

That's what I'm hoping for.  The flies could always be stowaways or something.  Once introduced they would be very difficult to get rid of, I would think.

I'm curious to just how important to the plot the location will be, though.
  • I'm kinda all in on the westworld is on another planet thing
  • I think it might be on an island. On the discover west world site they mention that their "consultants will work with your local port authority to chart your course to the park". This makes me think accessing the park by sea.

I feel like it may be better if this is just one of those questions the show doesn't answer. I don't think knowing where or when it takes place is important to the plot and I feel like if they do answer it, it has the potential of being very disappointing because its something we are already speculating about. I'm trying to keep my mind open for VR, another planet or even it its as simple as a location in the current US.
