McGregor vs. Mayweather / August 26, 2017

edited August 2017 in General
Just wanted to get a thread started about this fight.

Are any of you planning on watching it?

Who do you think will win?

Will it be more exciting than Mayweather vs. Pacquiao?

From what I've seen, it's $100 here in the States. The fight is at 6 PM PDT on Saturday.
  • Hmm that's seems to be a deal. Since 50 sgd is like 30-35usd

It's £20 to watch here in the UK, so about $25.

I won't be purchasing it because I'll probably asleep when it happens, but if I happen to be awake I'll find a stream online.

Personally think Mayweather will destroy Conor, but you never know!

Its $59.95 AUD so just under $50US its on at 11AM on sunday morning so it could be a sunday bbq event but i refuse to give Mayweather any money. Even though my hold out wont cause him any issues.

This is going to be a terrible fight and the only way its not Mayweather easy is if McGregor gets dirty. I think Floyd milks rounds to make it a spectacle bit he wont really be in trouble but hey it only takes one punch. My feeling is a guy who specialises in not getting hit isnt going to be touched in a boxing match with a guy who isn't a boxer.
  • i'm probably not going to see it, although i am interested in the outcome.

i think the conventional wisdom is probably right and a non-boxer trying to box against an accomplished boxer is what it looks like:  a naked cash grab and conor's got no chance.  on the other hand...  one lucky hit is all it takes, so maybe "no chance" is a little strong.
  • I'll be watching

I think Maywesther will win, but I had a dream that McGreggor won. IF Connor can get a few power shots in early he might take it. I still think Mayweathers defensive skill is the best in the business. It's a cash grab for both fighters period. As with any fight, one punch is all it takes to end a legacy.

It won't be more exciting that May vs Pac, but has the potential to be if Connor gets wreckless. The problem is May usually lulls fighters out of their game plan.

Connor is going to get a proper taste of the American legal system, no matter how it turns out. In that, either Mayweather is going to lawyer fight him to death, or McGregor is going to win in a questionable fashion and spend years and a fortune in legal fees to get the official W.

That being said, if Connor McGregor wins outright and Trump takes the White House in the same 12 month period, the whole universe is going to implode.

I think Floyd will win in a landslide.

Here are two scenarios I think it will unfold:

    A. Floyd will toy and outbox Connor for a few rounds (the 4th is what Connor claimed KO Floyd) and Connor will start to get desperate and gamble resulting in a KO for Mayweather.

    B. Connor shows enough skill/power for Mayweather to be cautious of. The fight will go the distance with Mayweather's usual pot-shots, straight to the body-straight to the face, dodge and move all the way through 12 rounds for his usual victory.

Floyd could also throw the fight in hopes to earn more money with a rematch. But I think he's too prideful to do that, even for money.
  • I used to think that Floyd will easily win , and I still think he'll most likely win, but you can't underestimate Connor and the training he's undergoing AND he's 20 years younger, taller, and a longer reach. With the news they're using lighter gloves, I'd hate to be better either side on this

and be mr. 49-1?  no way, if he somehow loses it's legit.

  • @furanka thisbis Floyd's last fight.

To win CM would need to hit Mayweather cleanly with a good power punch. The only one recently that has been able to do this was Mosley and he got cocky and then lost.
  • I vote for a sinkhole to open beneath the ring and swallow them both.

Actually, it can take the rest of Vegas with it as well.

I don't think CM will even catch Floyd with a clean shot. He's faced faster fighters (Zab Juddah and Manny Pacquiao) and stronger fighters (Canelo Alvarez) and made them look mediocre. Also, Floyd has called his last 3 fights his "last fight". So I don't buy it. If the money is right, he'll lace up his gloves again.

He faced Canelo Alvarez who was a 42-0 23 year old (younger than Connor is now) and won pretty handedly, and I think Canelo has more power and speed than Connor. I share Max Kellerman's sentiment that lighter gloves/heavier gloves, they're all only going to help Floyd (he normally fights in 8oz gloves). But of course, there's always a puncher's chance, and that's the only thing I think Connor has going for him.

  • The only reason the lighter flavors may hurt Floyd is because of his hands. He's had issues for years with them (part of the reason he changed his style). He could break/fracture both if he hits Connor enough.
  • We usually buy all boxing ppv and most ufcs', but I'm not going to get this one. I'll go to a bar and watch it. I have a hook up so I'll get the n for free.

Mayweather will win easily. It will b boring AF. Connor will be right there to be hit all night. Fighters in the UFC square up because that puts them in position to use multiple attacks strikes, kicks, grappling, takedowns etc. They also don't use movement as much as boxers so they don't know how to cut off the octagon/ring. Floyd is going to be all over the ring, Mcgeggor has little to no chance of cutting off the ring. Mayweather will get on his bike and throw one or two shots the run again. It will go 12 rounds because Floyd doesn't KO anyone any more. Floyd hold his opponents to around 20% punches landed, I think that he will hold Connor to around 10%

The Mayweather fight that Connor should study is Maidana 1. In that fight Marcos bum rushed and threw a lot of punches from weird angles. In the next fight Floyd didn't let him do that.

This whole fight has been a distraction and a carnival since it was announced. Although Connor isnt American it is also playing the Great White Hope card and boxing sure isnt good for race relations. A whole lot of white people want to see a white guy beat the hell of a black guy and vice versa. I'm not advocating racism or violence but it does conjur up a lot of symbolism and can create issues at watch parties even amongst great friends.

I'm with you i dont like either of the guys and i think Mayweather has gotten away with a lot outside the ring that most wouldnt have. McGreggor has demons as well and obviously is a professional wrestler in other fighting disciplines but im not a fan either

I really used to despise McGregor.  Seeing him lose to Diaz was a great feeling.  However, the more I see of him and read about him, the more I respect what he has built in such a short time.  Mayweather is a huge piece of shit, plain and simple.  He is a terrible human, so seeing McGregor beat him would not only be amazing, it would be arguably one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

I know nothing about either guy, I don't even know the sport (is it boxing? Or UFC?) I want the guy who was wearing a pin stripe suit that the pin stripes said "fuck you" because that suit was badass. (It was the white guy - not even sure who is who) I do believe I saw something on FB that he wore a basketball jersey to an event related to this fight (some kind of presser or maybe a weigh in?) and the basketball jersey was the player with whom the other guy's wife had had an affair. Douchey and badass. Go him!!

It appears to be $100 everywhere here in the states. My son had asked to order it, but he's going to go to s friend's place and pay his folks $20. A drive in down in Massachusetts is hosting the fight at the cost of $30/person and everyone is up in arms -- apparently the drive in usually charges per car. But I'm sure any place that hosts the fight publicly has to get permission from the PPV company... not sure of specifics but I'm sure it's not cheap. Looks like you all overseas are getting it at a bargain (relative to the time of day in your region, however)
  • @TaraC73 for bars and the like they pay a much larger fee for being able to display the fight. I've seen numbers (for other fights) anywhere between 3k at the low end up to 20-30k (I'm sure there may be higher). It makes sense at ~30 a person if they are trying to recoup costs. I haven't seen vendor prices yet (really haven't looked) for this fight.

McGreggor is the fighter with the pinstripe suit. He is an MMA fighter from the UFC. Mayweather is a boxer and this fight will be boxing using 8oz gloves (usually Mayweather uses ~10oz).

it's gonna be a shitshow. as a boxing fan this is ridiculous. McGreggor would get dropped by a random undercard fighter on Friday night fights on ESPN in a straight up boxing fight.

i'm 'testing' the stream for work so i'm gonna watch, but no way i'd pony up $100 to see this circus.

now Canelo/GGG on the other hand, fuck yeah! take my money!

  • @KingKobra most if Mayweathers fight have been in 8oz gloves. The reason this fight was going to be in 10oz gloves was the weight. 154lb uses 10oz, under that uses 8oz. Floyd usually fights below 154, 147 or a catch weight.
Floyds is old, but still one of the best boxers p4p. That being said there are a few fighters that I think would beat him. Crawford, Spence, and not to mention GGG.

Like I said before this is going to be boring because Floyd doesn't take chances. A more exciting fight and one that I think Connor could win would have been against Manny. He would mix it up with Mcgreggor, and maybe even put him down. Connor would have multiple chances to land the big shot. A quick fight would have been GGG v McG. That fight might not even go 2 minutes.

  • The way I see it, Floyd should win this rather easily.  Regardless of the training that CM is getting, he isn't a boxer by trade.  CM hasn't been boxing for his entire career.  His training was different.  I mean, not that it's entirely the same, but look at what happened when CM Punk went into UFC and trained for over a year, he got totally destroyed (and that was wrestling into UFC).  So, I just don't see C having a real chance at winning.  CM's best bet is to hopefully land 1 punch that catches Floyd cleanly and knocks him out.  But Floyd is a great defensive fighter and there is a reason he is undefeated.  So, I don't think CM really has a chance.  And then there is the fact that boxing is a longer sport.  So, the longer the fight goes, there is a chance that CM gets tired.  Once again, CM can do stamina training until the cows come home, but until you're actually in the real scenario, there is no way to really know how his stamina will hold up.

All that being said, while I wouldn't buy this fight via pay-per-view for just me, if friends were buying it and it was just like, everyone throw in $5 to pay for it, I'd do that.  Or I may go out to a bar and watch it there (and then probably have to pay a cover to get in, since I think a lot of bars did that for Floyd-Pacquio).

@KingKobra thanks for the clarification! So this is a mixed athlete boxing match... sounds interesting!! I'll put my money on Mayweather, knowing it's a boxing match and he's a boxer by trade.

    Enjoy the fight :0)

I look forward to watching an hour of movie previews and McGregor shouting vaguely racist/homophobic nonsense while Mayweather holds up some money next to Justin Beiber or whatever followed by a boring fight full of dancing around and easy counters for an easy decision.

I keep watching these boring Mayweather fights knowing what's going to happen on the off chance his wife beating ass gets knocked out so I might as well not stop here, but this is really dumb.

Don't forget about Mayweather's hilariously comical looking bodyguards and crew that stand around him dressed like 14 year olds.
  • Hmmm so dressing comfortable is now dressing like "a 14 year old".....hmmmm ok then....
  • Bump, anything happen yet?

Main event is delayed due to multiple PPV outages (Cable, sattelite, online). Just about to start.
