What makes Bald Move so good?

My real intention here is to get other podcast recommendations, but I have some thoughts on this. Here's what makes Bald Move so good (as far as I can tell).

1. Intelligence: this one is simple. Jim and Aron are just generally smart and insightful dudes.

2. Focus: Jim and Aron stay on task. They get to the point. They rarely (if ever) chase rabbit trails. And, even though they are both very funny, they don't chase jokes. They aren't trying to be funny, they just are funny. They leave jokes where they need to be (and don't belabor the point).

3. Homework: yes, Jim and Aron are intelligent and insightful... but they make good use of the intelligence and insights of other people. They seek out the best perspectives that can be found on the internet. Of course, importantly, they don't just leave it at that. They build on / evaluate those other perspectives.

4. Chemistry: Jim and Aron are a great pairing. Yes, Aron may have more of the "gift of gab" than Jim, but gabbing alone only makes for a pretty-good podcast. Every Aron needs a Jim (and vice versa). Jim has plenty to say too, but his natural state seems to be to sit back and critically evaluate what he's being pitched... he consistently challenges ideas, clarifies questions, etc.

Two questions:

Have I missed anything (and)?

Are there any other movie / tv podcasters that hit all these points? It's my experience that most miss on at least one or two of these.

  • I would add honesty. I’ve listened to other podcasts that sugar coat shit or act like every show they cover is the best thing on the planet but J&A will tell you their honest opinion about something whether it’s a popular opinion or not.

In addition to what's already been indicated above, I love that they genuinely care about their listeners - paying attention to their lives and just who they are (names, do they have kids, what they do for a living or their hobbies, etc).  Their listeners and supporters aren't considered just a number or a dollar sign.

I'd add intelligence without pretension.  There are a lot of smart/analytical podcasts out there, but not all of them are personable, accessible and littered with dad jokes.

podcasts aside.. a community of good people, built by a couple of good guys that say 'fuck' and 'shit' as much as i do.

Because somehow J & A managed to create a form of social media that does absolutely nothing but benefit my life. Incredibly rare in 2019, I honestly could not thank them enough for that.

Podcasts ain’t bad either.. I guess.

I pretty much show up for the facial hair and personal hygiene tips, but the fact that I question my long held political beliefs and entire worldview after most shows is cool too.

  • Bald Move and Binge Mode may both have the same abbreviation and cover similar topics, but your not getting this type of quality content from the Ringer!

Everything already well said, plus I trust them. Their reviews of movies and tv are my guide through a shit ton of shows out there. And I love the look I get from others when listening on the Bart (train for non-bay area folks) and I burst out laughing from some witty or smartass comment. Thanks boys.

  • I often run when I’m listening, and no other podcast has caused me to nearly fall on my face from unexpected laughter.

I listen to other funny shit, but you are prepared for the laughter so it doesn’t knock you off balance. It takes a special kind of talent and a special type of show to land an unexpected belly-laugh in the middle of podcast like the Leftovers or other such serious fare.

If I’m ever in Utah and I see some dude running at me while laughing hysterically, I’ll know it’s you and not to be terrified

  • Seriously, the content is great and is the main reason for listening but if the sound was shit I don't know how much I would listen. Getting the sound to be great and consistent through multiple locations is a great credit to them. There is many a podcast that I bailed on that sounded like they were recorded in a bus station bathroom.

  • From the guys: arons squicky laugh and everything from above

the community: I have not only never had a problem with any of you, but when available some of you have really helped me. I’ve never seen a community like this.

  • Also, I have loved the lunch podcasts. With all the gaming and tv coverage i listen to its good to break away and still listen to a podcast but something multi topic based.

people coming over during the holidays and seeing all the xmas cards i have posted on the back of my front door. watching them wince and ask 'who are these guys with Paul Giamatti?'. the Jim dressed as an elf on ARon's Santa lap one was a litter hard to explain :D

I started listening around 2014. I was looking for a Walking Dead podcast and happened upon Bald Move. Once I realized they had other podcasts of lots of my favorite shows, especially Game of Thrones, I really started digging in. As everyone has been saying, the guys are extremely smart, well researched and always make the coverage as entertaining as possible.

When I started flirting with the forums, I found a community of lots of funny, smart, interesting people. Between the two, I decided my year or so of free loading had to end. I joined up and never looked back.

  • Aside from their dashing good looks and great personalities, they provide me hours of entertainment on my long drives for work and have turned me on to many things I might never have watched.

  • One of my favorite games is playing “What’s Aron’s New Word?”. 2 weeks ago it was “obtuse” after presumably their Shawshank Redemption cast. I say it out of love because we all do it— we hear a word that really resonates with us whether it’s new or we hear someone use it in a great way and we incorporate it in conversation for the next 2-3 weeks.
