Mythic Quest - Apple TV Discussion thread

First episode has dropped. This show is created by Rob McElhenney of It's Always Sunny game.  The first episode was written by Rob and Charlie Day.

It's legit funny.  So far it's got some of that Always Sunny feel, but the characters are slightly less horrible.  I'd definitely recommend the show. First episode was really solid in a way pilots most often aren't.  I've heard some critic opinions that it continues to be great for the episodes that have been screened, as well.

Hey, they're all up on my online outlet of choice. Did I just see Danny Pudi? Yes, yes I did!

Edit: Danny Pudi and Rob McElhenny's nipples in the first 3 minutes. So far so good :D
  • I knew my appletv sub would come into handy eventually! Looking forward to catching this out

I watched the first two episodes. It scratches my Silicon Valley itch to be sure.

I just got around to watching this and I really enjoyed it. It was a little jarring seeing that kid who was so serious and sad in The Sinner playing a foul mouthed teenage gamer, but he was great. Also loved Charlotte Nicdao - I haven’t seen her in anything for ages. Oh, and the crazy assistant was hilarious.

The standalone episode with Jake Johnson and Cristina Milioti was amazing - it was like a short film that told a complete story from start to finish so succinctly and beautifully.

I wish Rob McElhenney would dial back the Botox, though. I find his weirdly smooth forehead so distracting when I’m watching this or Always Sunny.

    Anyway, keen for S2!

Yeah, that flashback episode is amazing. I assume you watched the Quarantine episode as well? That hit me pretty hard as well.

@Garthgou81 I did watch the quarantine episode, and it did make me a bit teary.

Man. The second season is just as good as the first. Last episode might have been the best of the series..

@hatorian That ending was so harsh. :-(

  • I've only seen the first two or three episodes of season one, but it didn't really grab me.  After reading some comments here it makes me think I should get back to it.

Definitely not the ending I expected with the Breakfast Club....

Man, what a great episode. The last few minutes were just something else. This show catches you off-guard with that stuff. Also, I noticed that last season had that flashback episode (it was episode 5 and spectacular). This season's episode 5 was spectacular in a different way. I wonder if that is going to be their thing.

They are also setting up more drama than I anticipated, that stuff will have to come back and have some payoff, right?

Damn it, I was waiting for the fallout from the end of the last episode and they pulled a Walking Dead!

It was a good episode though - not as stunning as the one last year with Jake Johnson and Cristin Milioti, but that one came out of nowhere.
  • Should have known that flashback was coming. Damn. Good episode though. Transistor Moom is obviously ET while the haunted mansion is maybe House on Haunted Hill?

I’m guessing they will circle back next episode. At least I hope do. Poppy needs a reality check.

Nope...and man, I have now lost any empathy I once had for CW. It is interesting that they do a flashback episode to get some background on that character. Only to flash forward to him still being a complete piece of shit in the present day. I am not sure if the show wants me to like him more or just feel sorry for him. But it pretty much made me never want to see him on-screen again. He was just awful to everyone involved in this episode.

I think the flashback was to show him becoming an asshole. Explaining why he is the way he is. That’s what I got out of it.

I was annoyed by this episode - I want to know what’s going on with Poppy and Ian. Last week’s flashback was good but I just don’t care about CW as anything other than a minor character who pops up occasionally and does dumb old person things.

Okay, fair enough. I guess when shows dedicate that much time to someone specifically, I tend to think that they are trying to unpeel the layers and make us like the character more. I understand he became an asshole. But it wasn't nearly interesting enough for an over-sized episode (that flashback episode was 40 minutes at least), much less the follow-up where we get to see him be an asshole for the entire runtime.

Yeah, considering how we left the episode between Poppy & Ian...I was really okay with the flashback. That can be used for tension and suspense. But then to have another one that doesn't address the emotional cliffhanger we were left on is pushing things.

I really love this show. I just am surprised they went this route.

I wonder if in years to come we'll have some term for the weird stuff shows had to throw together to make a season during the pandemic.  https://www.kpbs.org/news/2021/may/07/mythic-quest-season-two-puts-pandemic-rear-view-mi/

Somebody get Jessie Ennis her own show.

Finally back on track. I do love how this show manages to be both funny and touching without devolving into being saccharine.

I also love that Brad appears to have the upper hand with Jo again. You come at the king, you better not miss!

Apple's latest 'Mythic Quest' tie-in is a digital book by C.W. Longbottom

'Apple this week published "Tears of the Anaren," the touted novella penned by "Mythic Quest" character C.W. Longbottom.

'The book and accompanying audiobook, both available for free through Apple Books, is a send-up of the fantasy writing genre, reports ScreenTime.'

This last episode felt like a series ending. I really hope it’s not.
  • I say “Tears of Anaren” out loud exactly as it’s said by CW

According to Google, it hasn’t been renewed for S3 yet :( I hope it does. It’s such a fun show
