We went from beautiful summery weather to cold, gray, and about to rain - so I made some really meaty chili (no beans) tonight, along with a pan of cornbread muffins (just slightly on the sweet side).  Add some melted butter on those muffins, top the chili with some shredded cheese & sour cream, add a glass of ice cold milk, and yeah.... I'm in foodie heaven right now.

    That. sounds. fantastic.
Putting beans in chili is against the law.

Its only against the law to call it chili. Nothing wrong with a nice hot bowl of bean soup with meat sauce.

But chilli is just a stew that has a chilli sauce - and you can put anything in a stew. No stew rules!

Disagree on chili as a stew.  To me, a stew is a hearty meal-like soup with a lot of veggies & potatoes and (usually) some sort of meat.  Chili is ground (maybe shredded) meat, beans, spices, and occasionally onions or peppers. Chili ain't no stew!

You guys - trust me on this.  Naked Chicken Chalupa.  A lil extra avo ranch sauce, lettuce of course (comes with it), no tomatoes, add sour cream and sub the nacho cheese sauce in place of shredded cheese.  Oh. dear. Taco. Bell. heaven.

Man seriously you need to just come to Houston for a weekend and hang with me!  B)

today I was jonesing for a torta. I wanted to go to Las Tortas Perronas which literally means “Bitchin’ Tortas!” but it was a wee too much of a drive for my lazy ass. And it’s 5 miles away so super lazy. I just went to a neighborhood place. But yes Niko Niko’s is the best. I used to live a block and a half from the original Montrose location. Walk over and pick up a to go order  of falafel plate and gyro plate. Ooh and their dolmathes!

edit: one time I forgot my wallet and that guy (Niko Niko’s) just laughed and said don’t worry.

  • I've had a prolific basil plant this year, so lots of pesto in the freezer. A go-to meal has been pesto pasta with Tuscan kale and white beans. Easy and tasty one pot meal!

We made it to Taku!  (didn’t see Shota though)  Thankfully we got there before the rush.  This line formed while we were waiting for our food.  We said “F*ck it” and got the F*ck It Bucket of karaage chicken & furikake fries with various dipping sauces & some of the watermelon salad (watermelon, feta, cucumber, in a vinegar brine & seasoned). Soooooo good!  The crispy skin on the chicken is BUSSIN.

A point of contention amongst TX hill country folk: Hruska’s VS Weikel’s. I’m 100% “Team Hruska’s”.  Authentic klobasneks. Warms my Bohemian heart. Every time I have a chance to stop by I do.  We bought a dozen for my in-laws for watching our dog while we were romping & river toobin’ in the hill country, but my wife forgot to bring them in to them from the car. So, advantage ME! Today is day 2 of having a bunch of these puppies available for snacking & breakfast.

Grilled peaches stuffed with goat cheese & drizzled with balsamic.  I couldn’t make the cute little drizzle lines, but let me tell you it doesn’t even matter.  This is sooooo good. :)
