I think the Oranges discussed in the scenes do relate to The Godfather symbolism, but it means much more. One of the most prominent "families" in Italy in the 1500s was the Medici family. Similar to the crime families in Fargo they engaged in feuds that often became wars for power. On the Medici family crest the round objects are oranges. They show up as symbols of the Powerful group in famous paintings as well, such as the Battle of San Romano situated in the Medici Palace, where orange trees are in the background, or the Arnolfini Wedding where a wealthy Medici has relocated to the Netherlands and we see oranges on the window sill.
