Dosent look like this one is popular here.
  • My husband and I just finished this.
I *loved* it.  Enjoyed every second of it.

  • I’m watching the last episode.

Cant believe how much I love this!

  • I'm almost surprised how good it turned out to be. It has the same level of cheese as the original films, but that's what you want. Right?

  • I guess in this case it does.

My sister and I used to play Karate Kid. The nostalgia on this one is off the charts.

I think they’re handling it better than a lot of reboots.

  • I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it as well.

I think they did such a great job of balancing the nostalgia, humor, cheese factor, and earnestness.

Also, since highschool, Johnny somehow became Biff Tannen level dumb, to great comedic effect.

    Yes he did!

  • in all fairness, it makes sense in context. How many brain cells does Johnny kill per hour?

I'm probably one of the few that this YouTube scheme worked on. There's enough content on YouTube that I like to listen to podcast style that I'm going to keep YouTube red for the time being.
  • I'm doing the same, I listen to videos in the background and also am loving not having any ads.

I had a reminder in my calendar to cancel YouTube Red, and wound up keeping it.

  • Loved the concept of this show.  Hated what they did to Daniel’s character though the first 8 episodes by making him a bit of a jerk.

I wasn’t going to bother with this, because The Karate Kid is probably the one iconic 80s movie that I wasn’t THAT into. Like, it was fine at the time, and I’ve seen it on TV a couple of times since, but it’s not one I’ve gone out of my way to watch again.

However, after hearing Pop Culture Happy Hour talk about it I was curious enough to check it out, and I was pretty much instantly hooked. I watched eight episodes yesterday/last night, and the final two this morning.

I really liked how they played it straight - it had some funny moments but there weren’t too many meta fan service jokes, which can get irritating. I also liked the way we saw the original story from Johnny’s POV with the flashbacks.

I feel like this could become a sleeper hit - it’s been out for six weeks or so and I’ve been hearing more and more people talk about it in the last couple of weeks. The “have you seen it” chatter has a Stranger Things vibe about it.

... Daniel had (at least) the seeds of jerkiness in the original movies.

That’s really true, I don’t think he was a bully, but I think if he would have ended up at Kobra Kai instead of with Mr. Miyagi he could have become a monster.

Honestly, I liked it better for that reason, too many teen and young adult movies have the protagonist being a saint who you have to push to ridiculous extremes to have them react with any negativity at all.

Danny was a decent kid, who was also a little shit. Johnny was a little shit who had a terrible mentor. Both of them can be heroic, but petty as well. I think that’s why this series really worked for me.

In in their own ways they are both trying to be better than they could be (Danny fixing Johnny’s car for free, Johnny not initially ratting out Danny’s daughter) but they’re both capable of pettiness.

Thats why why my favorite scene of the series was Danny’s wife inviting Johnny to breakfast. They both really want to fight, but I think they recognize how ridiculous they’re being.

  • Seasons 1 & 2 are now on Netflix. I’m late to the party but just finished season 1. Loved the movie as a kid and this show has been hitting all the right notes with me. I wonder does this series get made if William Zabka doesn’t play himself on How I met your mother?

Also it took me an episode or 2 to not see Daniel as his character from The Deuce.

finally got around to finishing both seasons. i enjoyed S1 (quite a bit) and thought it was fun. S2 was alright, had some moment here and there. i thought the season finale was pretty eye-rolling ridiculous.. i'll probably still check out S3 when it comes out later this year.

  • I decided to watch this after hearing it was pretty good and ended up binge watching over a couple days - I liked it quite a bit.  It's got its issues and is quite trop-y in a lot of ways but it's a fun watch and it's got heart.  I don't love the way the 2nd season ended. It was pretty bonkers and went a bit too far for what should be a show that I thought of as comfort-watching.  But anything can happen in season 3!

Just binged this on Netflix, so much fun! I thought there was some pretty good storytelling here. I have to say I think Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are doing some really good, believable acting here. I mean its not award winning stuff but its not cheesy 80s stuff one might think when they first hear about this show. Hearing rumors we could see Elisabeth Shue (Ali) next season 3, that could make for an interesting storyline.

i also heard a rumor that they may bring back Terry Silver from KK Part 3 in Season 3. maybe as Tory's dad. dun! dun! dun!

God dang I guess I’m going to have to watch this?

Had a rando roof assessment guy knock on my door a few weeks back and he stops mid-pitch to give me a hell yeah for my Kobra Kai shirt completely unrelated to the spin off and says he and his girlfriend are gonna continue motoring thru the episodes when we gets off of work.  I keep running into people about this show and everyone says good things it seems.

Where can I find the movies, I don't think I remember them very well. And which ones are important for the series? Just the 3 with Daniel and Mr. Arnold?

yeah only the first 3 are important to the show. the ones with Hilary Swank and Will Smith's kid are irrelevant (as they should be). i know they're on demand via Showtime (if you have that). just re-watched the first one with my 9 year old and she loved it. lots of questions about the 80's but we got through it. we'll probably watch Part 2 this weekend. i'm ready for some Peter Cetera - Glory of Love!

And really only the 1st is important, for the background of Daniel/Johnny. There are references to 2 and 3 as well. But I also feel like someone who has never seen the movies could still watch and get what is going on.

Hmm, I don't currently, but my bank is offering a 50% rebate on Crave, which offers SHOWTIME in Canada. I may take them up on it.
