  • David and Michael are long time TWD contributors since S2, although I’d describe their record as a mixed bag.
  • Was a hater but they actually maybe sort of brought me back. Looking forward to first few eps of second half

Yep that was a good one! The ending in the graveyard was classic horror creepy. This show is so much better with out the Rick.
  • So scary! Loved it.
  • Angela Kang saves TWD.  Best episode of TWD in years, maybe in nine years.  The group finding, fighting, and figuring out the [...] was solid entertainment.  My only issue is the lighting of some of the scenes with Daryl, Jesus, Eugene, and Aaron on the road using the flashlights seemed too well-lit but that could be my setup.

  • This new season continues to be a vast improvement from the last couple of years. Hats off to Kang for making TWD enjoyable again. The Henry storyline was kind of ‘meh’ but the rest was exciting. Did not see the ending going down like that, so it was nice to be surprised. (I do wish they had done more with THAT character before sending them off but, it was a great way to introduce the whisperers.  All-in-all, I’m pumped for the back half of the season! [ I am actually excited for TWD. Holy shit!]

That graveyard sequence was creepy AF.  RIP one of my fav characters.  :(

One minor gripe - I think I might have mentioned this last week? - I'm not happy with the direction they've taken Michonne.  Rick was the de facto leader of the group - so now that he's gone, it's automatically Michonne?  She's talking to the others like she's the HBIC, but who appointed her such?  I mean, I'm all for female empowerment but there's empowerment, and there's whatever Michonne is right now.

That aside, I'm really interested to see what happens now that
    Negan escaped
.  My exact words at the end were "ohhhh shit....oh no". :worried:

From the 2nd half preview, the Bad Events during the time jump will be at least discussed if not shown.  That should probably explain how she became the leader.

The [ spoiler ] is another good sign for the show.  We knew it was going to happen, having it happen so soon sure beats drawing out the time until it happens.

For sure.  It wasn't a matter of if, but when.
  • For reference you can spoil things that happen in the episode.

I know, but the thread doesn't indicate that it includes spoilers - just being safe for those who think they won't be spoiled in here.  I'd hate to be that person.

Does now! Go for it. I would hope that people clicking on an episode thread would know that the episode is going to be discussed within anyway, but it’s sweet of you to worry about it. :-)

Seems like Tom Payne was pretty over it and not too sad to go.

  • I'm imagining an alternate universe where Andrew Lincoln leaving hadn't been announced, and Rick was the one killed by the Whisperer in the graveyard. Still sad to see Jesus go. I think he's alive in the comic still (?)

But yeah, good creepy episode. I'd tentatively say that the Whisperers are the first thing in a long time that's translating to the show at least as good as, if not better, than in the comic.

I just wished they had waited more than 1 scene before the reveal. I would have taken an episode of them freaking out over whether or not the walkers are becoming sentient before figuring it out. A scene of them getting chased by running walkers would be terrifying if your assuming they're actually dead.

Still not sure about this whole side "we don't all get along for some reason" plot. I'm waiting for that to turn into a trainwreck of endless flashbacks, but so far so good.

I like your idea about the running "walkers".  OTOH, a common refrain I've heard among some fans of the show since the Whisperers plot started this season is "if walkers start talking, I'm out."  I think TWD used up so much goodwill the last several seasons that they didn't have the leeway to draw out the reveal.

I’ll just make all future TWD threads full spoilers because, honestly, even if the show is better I don’t think anyone really cares enough to be concerned about spoilers. If you have heavy duty show leaks then maybe make it a separate thread but if AMC themselves are advertising show spoilers I certainly couldn’t care less.

  • It was a good death. Bundled with a major WTF in a fantastic(al) setting, it played as if it was filmed in slow motion with opera in the background. A death that won't be used as another train wreck metaphor. Respectful.
I wish the character had been given more to do. Great character, great person. Easy on the eyes, too.
    [shakes fist at sky] GIMPLLLLLLLLLLE!!!!!!!!!

  • It's sad to see Jesus go but I can understand why his character wasn't much used. When you have a character who can take on 3x the amount of foes using fancy moves that a normal character can...you need 3x the amount of stunt people and a halfway decent fight choreographer, none of which AMC wants to pay for. Train too many characters in martial arts and every fight scene looks like it's out of a Hong Kong action, not any kind of horror, movie.

Like it was in seasons 1 and 2! Retconning running zombies out of the show was one of the worst mistakes they made IMO.
  • as badass as Jesus has been hand-to-hand, it was good to see what he could do with a sword... and we can be sure that the utter surprise attack by the whisperer is literally the only thing that could have done him in. Great episode.

  • not to go full hater or anything, but I am a bit concerned with some things about this episode....

Essentially, we have a classic "SUPER MEGA CLIFFHANGER" that smacks of recent season. And also have whats looks to be another BIG BAD, which kind of falls into the tired formula we've seen so far.

Maybe it'll work out fine because the overall execution will be better, but still, troubling.

What cliffhanger?  They literally pulled the mask off the guy.  It's far removed from "Who will Negan bludgeon with his bat?"

I can't say anything without comic spoilers, but I don't think your second point is going to come true either.

they were surrounded in a misty graveyard by walkers and humans-disguised-as-wakers coordinating an attack. that'd be the cliffhanger. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • so, the teaser for S9E9 does kinda take the threat out of the cliffhanger at any rate:

But it really does seem we have a new "big bad," the episode is titled New Enemy eh?
  • Still not sure what your _complaint_ is WRT the mid-season finale.  You wanted the show to not heighten interest in what happens in the next half of the season?

As far as the new big bad, I don't think you will find it fits "the tired formula we've seen so far" unless you want no human-human conflict of any kind.

And so, now that we’ve reach the end of Season 9A, it’s time to evaluate the half season as a whole. Unquestionably this half season is the best run of 8 episodes since......well I can’t actually remember the last half season that had a more than 4 good episodes in it but it’s definitely been a long time. Despite a years long campaign by AMC, Scott Gimple, Greg Nicotero, and almost every long term writer on this show to burn this show to the ground in a fire of its own mediocrity; it seems that Angela Kang was able to pull TWD back from the brink of probable cancellation to a C+ trending to B- show with a few TV movies in the works, which is quite an accomplishment given that it’s lost most of its lead actors. So congratulations Ms. Kang, fuck you Gimple, and I’m still keeping my eye on you AMC because you have an unfortunate tendency to fire showrunners whenever they prove themselves to be competent. I’ll have to decide on how to orient the threads going forward but they will be back in some fashion next half season so see you all again next year!

Don't mind the cliffhanger. It works how a traditional cliffhanger is supposed to in the pulpy serialized story sense. The Negan bat head-smash cliffhanger was totally broken because the only ones who didn't know what was happening was the audience. The characters already had their resolution to the situation but was just hidden from us because reasons.

    That being said...

for the second time in about as many weeks (the first one being Rick impaled on the rebar) they IMMEDIATELY cut to the 'next on' and show the characters now away from their predicament. It was probably three seconds between "we're surrounded in the graveyard" and a shot of them heading back into Hilltop. Just like RIck, it was him on the rebar and smash cut to him walking around doing his Rick thing.

FFS AMC, let your own episodes breathe for 2 seconds before semi-spoiling the show.

  • AMC literally cannot resist spoiling their own show for the sake of maintaining some narrative tension, it’s just not in their nature.
  • I loved this show when it first aired, but have been out for probably 5 seasons at this point. I think I'm just gonna completely blind, no recaps, etc (like, y'all talking about Jesus dying, I have no idea who that is) watch the season finale this time around and if I find it compelling enough despite only recognizing, generously, 1/3 of the characters, maybe I'll try and catch up or at least watch season 10.
