Ozark Season 3

edited March 2020 in Other TV
By far and away the best season yet, and the one when I was finally like “Man, this really is the new Breaking Bad.”

Did anybody else finish over the weekend?

S1 was not very good and poorly written to me. like the worse parts of Justified, Breaking Bad and Narcos in a blender. then with Michael Bluth starting an episode in a terrible situation with it ending with him 'being ok'. people seem to be raving, so maybe it got better.

No spoilers so will just say I liked season 1. Season 2 was not as good but still ok. And I'm loving season 3 so far, because you know, that happened and she didn't see it coming and then the sneaky......

  • I signed up for Netflix again just for this show and I wasn't disappointed. The acting and directing is great, and there is some truly heartbreaking moments with one of the new characters. I have a bit of a problem with some of the characters doing dumb things for reasons that aren't especially clear other than it adds to the drama, but they do just enough to make me believe that it isn't inconsistent behavior so I just kinda wave my hand at it. The money laundering problem solving is my favorite part of the show, so I hope this new development doesn't take away from that.

yeah after not being impressed with S1, i gave S2 a shot. yeah i'm out. don't get the hype. it's so predicable and silly.

I really enjoyed seasons 1 and 2. I’ve seen the first two episodes of the latest season and I haven’t been disappointed. Julia Garner’s Ruth is a joy to behold.

Ruth comes in throwing 100 mph right off the bat.

Was anyone struck by the vividness of the colours of that opening scene in Mexico (episode 1)? So much red, orange and yellow!!! Wow that came as a shock to mine eyes, as the series is normally awash in blue hues!
  • Ozark's is definitely one of the better Netflix shows around and season 3 is probably the best season so far. Some really tense scenes with great inter-faction politicking throughout. The Byrde family drama was excellent.

Also, it featured one of the greatest pick up lines in the history of TV. I never knew @Jim was moonlighting as a writer for season 3!

“I just think you deserve better. I think you’re pretty spectacular, to be honest. Now eat your burrito.”

I just finished episode 5. I love the show more with every episode. But I hate Wendy more with every episode. From the very beginning she has been one sneaky bitch. Is it just me? She is a horrible person making irrational decisions (relatively because it is Ozark we're speaking about.) No spoilers so can't get specific, but she is damn unsettling. Not sure what's going to happen next but I'd suggest that EVERYONE near her watch their backs.

  • Just finished the season yesterday and I've gotta say it was great! Ruth continues to be my favorite character on the show. The stuff they did with Wendy's brother really worked for me toward the end. Everything except the accent, at least. And Laura Linney... Damn! I'd like to see her nominated for an Emmy for this season, with the guy who played her brother (Tom Pelphrey) nominated for supporting actor. Such good performances.

To clarify - I hate Wendy because Laura Linney is such an amazing actress. And when watching we kept saying the actor playing the brother needs to win an Emmy, so 100% agree.

How good is the writing on the show? I can't believe I now kind of like Darlene. And i'm even more worried for Ruth and Wyatt.

  • You like Darlene?!?!  Oh god, I hate her so much. I sorta like what she did for Ruth but everything about her is completely repulsive.

I hate Wendy so much. She outdoes Walter White at his smarmiest spewing of bullshit, and that's her only move and she does it constantly. It made my blood boil.

I'm conflicted about Darlene. Ruth is the fucking best, and I like Wyatt too so having them on her side goes a long way, even if she's just using them. I kind of wish this conflict had come to a head this season. The tension with Helen was good but it dragged a little for me at the end.
  • I don't think I'll ever get to the point where I like Darlene, but I'm glad somebody stuck up for Ruth. Problem is, Darlene is such a bad person that I doubt there is much she can do to get me to actually like her. I keep going back to that scene where she had the sun blasting down on the baby's face, and when Wendy pointed it out and tried to cover him, she doubles down and flips the protector back up. That poor baby is going to have to suffer through her hubris his whole life.

  • Damn, I thought I posted in this thread but I never did. Damn what an amazing season. Absolutely loved the constant back and forth during the first half of Marty trying to sabotage what Wendy was doing. I'm 100% team Marty but I also think the show purposely pushed you that direction.

Wendy's brother was an amazing addition to the cast and also had easily the most heartbreaking arc in the Ozark series. The actor that played him did an amazing job other than 1 scene of him crying that was a little too much for me. I knew what was coming but episode 9 hit me emotionally in a way that I never expected.

I think this show will get some award love as the actors that portrayed Wendy, Ruth and Wendy's brother all did some stand out acting. Jason Bateman was good but not the standout performances that the others put on tape.

Absolutely hate Darlene. She is the worst and is manipulative as hell. If it weren't for Mr. Robot I would probably forever hate the name Darlene but Carly Chaikin was one of my favs in that show.
