Donating bail money? I’m sorry but I gotta disagree with that being a good way to help. I’ll donate to Law firm charities supporting working with our legal system to enact changes. If that money goes to helping court fees then fine. I imagine these charities are not using donated bail money to bail out someone arrested with a shopping cart full of TVs but I still think my money is better invested going towards active change management.
@Ben As far as Trump remaining President I think the simplest answer is by hook and by crook he’d just cheat to win the election November exactly like he did in 2016. He’s already trying to make it as hard as possible for people to vote against him and has all but admitted he’d accept foreign help to win again. It’s just way easier to win by manipulating the regular Democratic method of staying in office rather than inventing some brand new way to either cancel the election or refuse to accept its results. The alternative would require Trump to mobilize an actual military coup and admit that he knows he couldn’t win the election. Hard to imagine that violent insurrection and interventions by our allies wouldn’t take place if Trump literally tried a literal coup. It’s what Russia and China do, they just hold sham elections in which they rig the result in their favor.
So this picture of Trump walking to his insane bible photo-op ("Is it your bible?" "It's A bible." Seriously, any one who claims to be Christian who still supports this guy can pound sand) has been making the rounds, and as a Detroit Lions fan we use FTP to mean "Fuck the Packers" (another football team in the Lions' division that has had substantially more success than the Lions) and literally every time I see it I think "wow someone in DC really dislikes the Packers" and it takes my brain a second to remember that for normal people that means "fuck the police."

I'll be damned. I thought it meant Fuck the President. Then I noticed the Fuck Trump on the other side.

I hate to be alarmist, and I want to say I support the protestor's cause, though I am concerned about the methods, but I think this is already an insurrection, or at least is being dealt with as such, and is likely to grow out of control. It's been less than a week and the military is in major metro areas squaring off with citizens. Several police were targeted by vehicles and improvised explosives were going off in major cities, on a Monday night. This is different than protests before. I think people are done protesting and the feds are happy to antagonize a fight, in mostly Democratic cities, I should add. Is anybody else really fucking worried right now?
This country has had its share of this kind of stuff. The 60’s with civil rights riots to the Vietnam protests. Campus take overs the 68 democratic convention riot to Kent State massacre. We should be Able to handle this.
Not sure why you linked my post in that, by accident I assume.
My biggest longterm concern with all of this, beyond the idea that the guy in charge of the country is a big fan of authoritarianism and would love to put the country under martial law, is that there’s still a global pandemic going on and all these people gathering together, and inevitably being arrested and placed in tight confines together, is going to wreak havoc on a virology level. No way this doesn’t cause more outbreaks. (Which will of course be blamed on the protestors and not the federal government that’s still failing to produce some real available testing but I digress)

Here I was thinking, "File Transfer Protocol... what an odd thing to graffiti."

Is it just me or is that photo like some gross parody of that Norman Rockwell painting of the little black girl? Is that intentional?

I'm sorry it was simply because you had used the word insurrection and it unleashed all my anxieties of the last few days. Trust me, I'm still worried about the pandemic, too, for the pain it will cause to people as well as the strain on infrastructure. I'm also still worried about the historic unemployment, for similar reasons. The stock market hasn't really crashed. Yet? Oh, AND I'm worried about the authoritarian "government" antagonizing its justifiably enraged citizens. It's a bad situation all around but hopefully we come together and my fears prove wrong.
Wow I did not expect to wake up today to #WhiteLivesMatter getting trolled TF out by Kpop fancams. Excellent. Lots of international support...Amsterdam, New Zealand....John Boyega's speech at the London protest... Houston had a massive peaceful protest yesterday. I loved it when the horse riders came through with that Acre Homes energy. It was like "Oh we got cavalry too."
It's kinda funny cause me growing up: "NO WE DON'T ALL RIDE HORSES IN HOUSTON, MAN! GAWWWD!! Me now: "YES WE HAVE HORSES IN HOUSTON MAN WHATCHYOU THINK?!

A couple of days ago Dallas Police sent out a request for people to give tips as to where the protests were gathering, or other info to help out DPD. Kpop stans (how do you do fellow kids) flooded the app, causing it to crash. Hilarious.
The military seems to have crossed some lines - right? Gassing peaceful US citizen protesters, using a Red Cross marked helicopter to disperse peaceful US citizen protesters - right?
Where are/were the 2nd amendment nut-job gun owners who have been amassing personal arsenals for years to fight against an over-stepping, oppressive government??

Lol these people have never actually given a shit about government overreach as long as it's directed towards people they don't like. It's not like they were out protesting the Patriot Act, they have never actually cared about the constitution. It really is as simple as they feel as though the law should protect but not bind them, while others it should bind but not protect. The cops are there to serve them specifically.

In my original post, I exercised restraint, and did not add my personal belief that most of those guns have been procured by racists out of racist fear. Oooops.
I have whiplash from seeing some of the same people who protested government overreach and fascism with lockdown recommendations or mandates due to the Coronavirus, now demanding an invasion by the active duty military to control the cities because they’re scared.
They were quoting Franklin in support of protesting lockdowns: “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
Where is that Benjamin Franklin spirit now folks? It’s only been a month, did y’all forget?

I posted this on my facebook page with all the references to Hitler and Nazis redacted just to piss off all the Trump/MAGA dolts on my page.
How Did the Nazis Gain Power in Germany?
By Timothy Snyder
THE DEATH OF DEMOCRACY Hitler’s Rise to Power and the Downfall of the Weimar Republic By Benjamin Carter Hett Illustrated. 280 pp. Henry Holt & Company. $30.
We ask about the rise of the Nazis from what we think is a great distance. We take for granted that the Germans of the 1930s were quite different from ourselves, and that our consideration of their errors will only confirm our superiority. The opposite is the case. Although Benjamin Carter Hett makes no comparisons between Germany then and the United States now in “The Death of Democracy,” his extremely fine study of the end of constitutional rule in Germany, he dissolves those comforting assumptions. He is not discussing a war in which Germans were enemies or describing atrocities that we are sure we could never commit. He presents Hitler’s rise as an element of the collapse of a republic confronting dilemmas of globalization with imperfect instruments and flawed leaders. With careful prose and fine scholarship, with fine thumbnail sketches of individuals and concise discussions of institutions and economics, he brings these events close to us.
The Nazis, in Hett’s account, were above all “a nationalist protest movement against globalization.” Even before the Great Depression brought huge unemployment to Germany, the caprice of the global economy offered an opportunity to politicians who had simple answers. In their 1920 program, the Nazis proclaimed that “members of foreign nations (noncitizens) are to be expelled from Germany.” Next would come autarky: Germans would conquer the territory they needed to be self-sufficient, and then create their own economy in isolation from that of the rest of the world. As Goebbels put it, “We want to build a wall, a protective wall.” Hitler maintained that the vicissitudes of globalization were not the result of economic forces but of a Jewish international conspiracy.

Hett, a professor of history at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, sensitively describes a moral crisis that preceded a moral catastrophe. If Jews were held responsible for what happened in Germany, then Germans were victims and their actions always defensive. Political irresponsibility flowed from the unfortunate example of President Paul von Hindenburg. He was famous as the victor in a battle on the Eastern Front of World War I, even though the credit was not fully deserved. Hindenburg could not face the reality of defeat on the Western Front in 1918, and so spread the lie that the German Army had been “stabbed in the back” by Jews and Socialists. This moral weakness of one man radiated outward. Once Hindenburg won the presidential elections of 1925, Germany was trapped by his oversensitivity about a reputation that would not withstand scrutiny. He believed that only he could save Germany, but would not put himself forward to do so, for fear of damaging his image. Without Hindenburg’s founding fiction and odd posturing, it is unlikely that Hitler would have come to power.

It was never about actually fighting tyranny with those idiots, except the "tyranny" of requiring the barest minimum of due process before you give someone a weapon capable of killing a dozen people in seconds. It was always about being able to openly carry guns to harass and intimidate brown people.
