I like to call that a "re-canceled". Obviously better renewing for a final season so they can close everything out rather than just being canceled out of the blue. Or going on for too long and running out of ideas.

Isn't this one of their most popular shows? I would have assumed this was a creative decision

I wouldn't call it canceled. I think the story has just run its course.

ah ok. I was confused for a NY minute. There will be one more season because the story does need to end.
PS - I love this show.

I have heard people really like this. I just can't get over the premise of it sounding quite a bit like Breaking Bad. What should I know?

Kind of works in reverse of Breaking Bad.

That's exactly what I thought of.  And didn't The Sopranos also have a super-sized final season?

They did. So did Mad Men (they did two sets of 7 episodes each with a break between). But really it appears that networks have done this for a number of reasons. First, they get more episodes, second, they don't need to renegotiate contracts with the actors, so it is their slick way of getting more bang for their buck. Finally, they also get another shot at awards season. For all intents and purposes, The Sopranos had a seventh season. Calling that sixth season when they took a year-long break between is ridiculous.
  • I’m going to miss Ruth for sure. But I feel they can close the story in a satisfying way in another season.
  • I honestly feel like this show hit it's limit in season 3 anyway. Even season 3 was pushing it. I mean really, what else can they do except increase the violence? The story has been told.
