Apple TV+ Early Opinions

Got the free preview today. Could not get past the preview of Jason Momoa’s See without an eye roll. Going to try For All Mankind as I like Joel Kinnamin, Frank/Bobby from David Simon's stuff, and outer space.

I know pre-release reviews have not been kind. Any one try any of the shows?

  • I have to check. My entire technology system is Apple. The wife and myself have phones that are Apple. The kids have iPads for learning and what not. I only purchase my entertainment media from iTunes. Using the 4K Apple TV box. I have a iCloud subscription for my photos. Apple Music, etc

But I haven’t checked on the subscription for their streaming service. If they have a deal that includes discounts for the faithful Apple customers then I might consider it.

If it’s just another $10 no matter what then I’ll pass until I hear otherwise.
  • @Hatorian the Apple TV just prompted me out of nowhere for a free trial (of course it did). A week free than $4.99/month. I doubt I’ll keep it, though.

I have made it halfway through the first episode of For All Mankind before family interrupted. So far, it’s not bad. A bit of Top Gun, Man in the High Castle, and Apollo 13.

I’m going to wait and see. So far nothing has grabbed me and there’s so many good shows out right now and coming out on other existing services.
  • I’m a sucker for space race stuff. Plus, isn’t Frank Sobotka taking the US to the moon?  Can’t miss that.

Yes, he is. Finished episode 2 last night, and I give it a thumbs up. Its hard to rank anything after 2 episodes, but I'm invested in the principal characters and they are doing some good things with the alternate history. People that you'd think would be safe in history may not be, and they do a lot of interesting things with the social order of the time. Good writing so far, even though the dialogue can be over ambitious at times.

My one complaint is that the cast is blizzard white. I get it...1969 and the space race. The setting dictates the cast. But even Mad Men had background extras of color. It's jarring, especially against a soundtrack that uses so much music by black artist s of the period. Maybe it will change, but I'll keep watching.

Also, created by Ronald Moore (BSG).

Reading back it sounds like I’m bragging. And probably there is a part of me that is. But my iPhone is paid for by my company. My wife’s is $0 from the contract. The kids iPads are minis are purchased 2 years ago. The only thing we really pay for is iCloud.

And the decision to buy all our media through iTunes was simple since all our devices our Apple. Makes much more sense to buy a $10 movie on iTunes that is accessible across all our devices than it is to buy a blu ray.

I heard the new Samsung fold cost 2k. That Alone would pay for every device I have.
  • Watched all 3 available episodes of for all mankind and i think it’s great. I worried the major historical plot pivot would create a somber mood much like high castle but its surprisingly a fun watch. No other apple originals interest me at the moment. Looking forward to ep4
  • I really want to like Dickinson and I think I might BUT the language is just so informal. I’m a fairly informal person myself, but I like my historical shows to use the language similar to the time period. She says “Sup Bro” to her brother as he was introduced and I was not on board with such a modern and informal greeting between the two. I will watch it all but I think it’s going to be slowly.
  • Ironically I used my free year and tuned in Friday after work, but the show that caught my attention was an EPIX show they are streaming I never heard of called the Godfather of Harlem.

It's the connective tissue between Hoodlum
    And American Gangster.

I never knew it was a thing, but the first episode was really good.

Between Forest Whitaker, Vincent D'Onofrio & Giancarlo Esposito, I'm in!

Damn. This looks sick. Don’t see why this doesn’t have any marketing behind it. Definitely checking it out

  • My “blizzard white” concern is addressed by the show. I think it was an intentional choice by the show and is addressed at some point.

I bought a new MacBook Air and didn't realize it came with a free year of Apple TV+ so I am looking for any recommendations. For All Mankind looks cool and maybe See? I've heard Mythic Quest is better than it looks but I am suspicious. Anything you all have found that is good?

I have to say though, pretty disappointed with the amount of content on here. It's a free year so that is nice but if there isn't much to watch, who cares?

Mythic Quest is really worth a look. Their quarantine episode was out of this world. They know how to bring the feels. Servant was good, if a tad drawn out, but very creepy. AppleTV+ definitely is lackluster as far as content goes, especially when you compare it to an HBO Max which seems to have an unlimited amount of things.

  • Mythic quest is really good. I don’t think I would pay for the service though if it didn’t come free with devices.

AppleTV+ is really doo doo compared to HBO max.  There aren't enough original material on AppleTV+ let along content that I like.

I had the same reaction to the Jason Momoa show. I couldn't get past the first episode. I watched The Servant which was generally good, but not exceptional. I'm about 3 episodes into For All Mankind and I like it. The production quality may not be top tier, but I love space/space exploration, so that had a mitigating effect on my enjoyment of the show. I have to finish the season. I watched it when it first came out then got distracted with other things. Thanks to your post I'm going to jump back into it though.  :)

I haven't found any HBO-quality shows on it yet. I haven't watched everything, just all of Servant, one episode of whatever that Jason Momoa show is called, and a few episodes of For All Mankind. I worry that Apple is too involved in the productions --worrying about how the content affects their image, etc-- and therefore doesn't give the showrunners the creative license they need to make great TV. Hopefully, things will get better (or there are shows on there that are good that I just haven't seen yet). Apple has a fortune. If they paid for top talent and just let them do their thing, I think the service could have a lot of potential.
  • I really liked The Morning Show, For All Mankind, and Mythic Quest. I was surprised Morning Show had middling reviews, I suppose it’s a bit on the nose sometimes, similar to Newsroom.

I wondered why Mythic Quest didn’t get more love on the forum. I didn’t realize it was Apple + (I watched in an “alternate” way) But it is a really good show and I highly recommend it. Makes me think I should have watched Always Sunny.

so i started watching Calls (if you wanna call it 'watching'). when i heard about the concept i kinda scratched my head, but was intrigued. here's the premise:

Told through a series of interconnected phone conversations, these conversations chronicle the mysterious story of a group of strangers whose lives are thrown into disarray in the lead-up to an apocalyptic event.

basically it's only audio with stylistic subtitles. yeah i know, huh? the episodes are like 15-20 mins long and pretty well done actually. the voice actors are voiced by people such as Lily Colins, Pedro Pascal, Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass to name a few.

I liked the first episode well enough, it was super creepy and unsettling. I am curious about watching more, as I love radio plays/dramas. How far have you made it?
  • ChinaskiChinaski Santa Cruz, CA
i thought the exact same thing and am now on ep 6. it's also kinda cool when you either figure out the actors voice or see it in the post credits.
  • Signed up for Apple TV+ this month so we could watch the movie Wolfwalkers with our son (really good, the animation is unique compared to most stuff out there. Plus - Sean Bean!).

But I discovered that they're isn't an app for my Sony tv that has the Android TV platform. So I had to cast it from my laptop. Not the biggest deal in the world but a pain in the butt and not doing much to encourage me to keep the subscription, even though I do want to check out a few shows. I have a Roku on our basement tv so I guess this month I'll be doing my Apple watching down there...
