You weren't kidding about persnickety...that looks cleeeeeeaan!  I like it. You can tell it's a gig board: vol pedal, various choice overdrives, reverb, and modulation.  No extra BS 'cause you're luggin' it!  Very nice.

Ordered these 2 cutie pies today.  I've always known about the Mosky Rat for dumb cheap.  And I've always had a thing for RATs.  But while I'm ordering it, btw I popped my Ali Express cherry today, I see a little Klon clone for like $17.  Shit why not.  It's TB also.  $44 for both after shipping, but it will take until 10/1 to get here.  It's like 2 cheap ass pedals with my funny logic will somehow balance out what I'm about to do tomorrow with the R2R Electric pre-order gates opening at noon....

  • @CretanBull Yeah, I'm in the hole for a while on that Timmy.  The Candy Apple Sparkle is supposedly a Music City special and I spent another $60 on repairs (Paul wasn't unavailable.)  It's a modern classic that can't be denied though.  I was extremely impressed with it as a medium gain/stackable lead.  Believe the hype.

@cdrive It's the Lehle buffer.  They claim it's natural and transparent -- bullshit.  I have the treble rolled down on the amp because of it.  However, everything really shines and there's no signal change in wireless or long cables.

It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm really excited about the Dan Zink Bit O' Honey Mini (middle row on image.)  It's pretty highly rated as a BJFE clone and it's one of the only minis on the market.  I don't usually like taking "unicorn" pedals on the road because shit happens and you want something that can be replaced, but I had to give that one a try.

  • I've tried SO hard to get a Timmy...I'm not willing to pay the insane prices that they go for and whenever a reasonably priced one comes up it gets snatched up before I can get it.  I'm on a waiting list at several different stores to get a new one as soon as their get their shipments of them, but the waiting lists are really long :(

I would check out the Caline Pure Sky. Its a Chinese clone of the Timmy and its damn close to the original (the pots are traditional on the Caline where on the Timmy they actually cut each frequency). I bought one a while back and have recorded with it and gigged with it and at the time it cost me 25 bucks.

This is the part where people get mad about Chinese clones and IP theft etc. I totally understand but its an extremely low cost tester to see if you really want the Timmy. Plus if you are on a waiting no business is being lost etc. etc. Paul Cochrane kept prices down and I support you supporting him. But, if in the meantime you want to start working that transparent OD into your rig... Pure Sky, it's real damn good.

I'm not a tone snob or anything like that, but I thought that the Pure Sky was 'ok' - I actually liked it more than the MXR Mini Timmy that came out a while back - and it just left me wanting a Timmy more.  I've wanted a 335 for a long time but one isn't in the budget right now, so I ended up getting Gretsch's version of a 335...instead of being able to appreciate it for what it was, I just ended up resenting that it wasn't the 335 that I wanted.

I've got a Hot Cake right now, it's different than a Timmy but does the same sort of job so I can wait for an affordable Timmy to come my way.
  • Be a tone snob, don't apologize! That 335 lust is real af.

If it helps ease back that resentment, the 335 is notorious for being really difficult to stay in tune.

Yaaaaah! Just got my pre-order in for an R2R Electric AC107 treble booster!   They're still not sold out if anyone is feeling impulsive:  https://reverb.com/shop/r2relectric      Last batch apparently sold out in less than half an hour....

edit: stomp boxes are all gone.  amp tops still available.
  • I find my 335 just needs more routine maintenance (nut sanding and lube) to keep tune. I've seen something called a string butler that you can add to the headstock that eliminates the design flaw that makes them susceptible to tuning issues, but I haven't tried it.

  • Not that anybody asked but I bought both an Afterneath and a Slø. They are very different and both nuts. Gonna sit with them for a while and hope I have the guts to sell one. Initial impressions confirm what I thought going in. The Slo is super clean ambience and probably much more usable, while the Afterneath is weirder and wilder.

I was about to ask for a report back.  The fact that you bought both is both understandable and....satisfying to hear.  Your goal was a super weird ambient pedal, right? So Afterneath would clearly be the front runner?

Okay and speaking of report backs, @CretanBull man give us the skinny on that Spark Amp like you promised!

I'm going to have a new pedal day later tonight when mine arrives before 8 pm.  A post to follow.....

My first Les Paul had a G string that wouldn't stay in tune no matter what I tried.  My friend suggested a string butler and it worked!  I didn't really like the way that it looked, but it did make playing that guitar a lot more enjoyable.

I wrote a long review a couple of nights ago but the internet swallowed it up :(  I'll do it again, just discouraged.

In short (and I will do a proper review!) it sounds great and I like it a lot.

It's funny, because as I am playing around with them I can tell that I haven't really gotten a good grip on the reins of the afterneath while the Slo is just incredible out of the box. The combo is really special (this is my lizard brain paving the way to rationalize keeping both). In short I am way more into the Slo right now but when I want to push the weird factor to the next level it seems like unlocking the Afterneath would be the key.

One cool conundrum is that the latching function on the Slo creates a lush pad but bypasses the active reverb leaving just your dry signal over the top of the pad, which is where having the afterneath to pair is so awesome. That said I am working with my other delay and reverb (line 6 tone core relics) to try and approximate the Afterneath and able to get part of the way there. I also have a looper which I can use to do the pad thing as well. Both pedals are stellar and I took my time bargain hunting on reverb so I feel like I can take my time feeling them out before making a decision.

This is my first pedal by both Earthquaker and Walrus Audio and I'd have to say that I would give the edge to WA in terms of just being top shelf quality all around. Earthquaker  loses no points but WA just has an attention to detail that is uncommonly good imo.

It took a while for me to admit that the 335 had tuning issues but once I gave in and did some work on the nut and used some lube it made a big difference. I still have some issues if I am bending like crazy but it might just be time for a little more work. I am hoping to not have to get the butler but am glad to hear it works and would not rule it out in the future if I were to ever get to return to gigging.

I'm working on rehabbing my old mexi-strat in terms of functioning wang/whammy bar. It's close but no cigar so far in terms of being able to do more than light vibrato while getting the deep bend "reset" to work.

I had always wanted a ES-335 Dot also. I've always loved hollow bodies.  But too rich for my blood until I found many years ago a rare sunburst ES-333 2003 Memphis, USA back when that factory line gave a shit right before it got yanked from Memphis.  So not the shitty Tom DeLange ES-333 with the ridiculous race stripes.  With hardcase, scored it for $700. Gigged with it a while but it had a very slight bow in the neck that drove me crazy. (previous owner must've kept it in a hot garage one summer or something) Still playable but had to fight with it more than I wanted to so eventually sold it for $850. Used that money towards the Gretsch Tennessee Rose modded to Tennessean I posted earlier in this thread.  Love the Gretsch. That's my "one day under the bed / heirloom" guitar to pass on to my boys if one of them catches the music bug.  Also in my early 30s I looked a lot like Jason Momoa  :D

It’s here and it’s amazing. I’m moving at least 2 maybe 3 pedals off my board. Super faithful Dallas Rangemaster AC107 2 knob treble booster from this really cool and super nice guy who harvests vintage parts from old electronics.

Really great new pedal day. That crazy phone fuzz came in from Indonesia and he put a lot of craft love into it. Like a piece of art. I tried swapping the phone with a stylophone which was wild!  Also scored a polara for $130. My wife even poked her head around the corner with eyebrows raised cause she’s a big MBV fan and I was pulling really nice Loveless swells in the reverse mode.

Ah, the stylophone.  I bought one as soon as I learned about Bowie using them.  Slightly related -- I think this is supposed to be a David Lynch inspired pedal? I must own one now.  Blue Velvet font, mountain peaks, and of course the title... Mulholland Drive.

Well Jim Jones ain’t about it but I’m all about all things Lynch!  When I picked up a stylophone, it was cause it was just a quirky and a super cheap novelty item.  Then I was amazed to see it used by Tall Dwarfs for All of My Hollowness:

Pulled apart and stripped the whole bedroom set-up and then put together a new configuration yesterday. An afternoon project that was super cathartic.

I've been thinking about doing the same, just getting a small board for 3-5 pedals and simplifying things.  The problem is that I'm really not sure about which pedals I'd use.  My Blue Sky would need to be one, so would my Boss chorus - those two are a lock.  I'd also need some kind of overdrive, not sure which.  The 4 (or 5th) pedals might determine what kind of board it would be, and at this point, I'm not really sure about that.  I want a 'just the basics' board - so maybe a delay pedal?

Well what I did yesterday I’d say isn’t really an essentials set up; hell there’s 4 different fuzzes on there. Ok maybe that is essential  :D. But it IS relegated by the amount of real estate on my old gig board. Delay I’d say hell yeah. Also I can’t live without some sort of tremolo or vibrato would be my suggestion.

These two lil cuties made their way from China. They’re so tiny like I want to make a little blanket for them:

  • I bit the bullet and ordered a Timmy today.  There was a Timmy v2 on Reverb for $290 + $30 shipping (so $320 total), that's the first time I've seen one for under $300.  But I really wanted the new Anniversary Edition v3.  I messaged someone who was selling a v3, they were asking $350 including shipping.  I linked them to the other ad and said that I was going to buy a Timmy today and it was either going to be the one I linked to or his if he'd meet the other guy's price (basically, asked him to knock $30 off his asking price).  He agreed and I bought it!

Is that a Mascis JM? What are the mods? How is the trem?

It is indeed a JMJM.  Mods you can see this post I did 5 years ago on OSG when I got this guitar:  http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=58169&p=1243057#p1243057

You can see more detailed pics on the 1st page of this thread.

I love the drop-in Staytrem.  Unfortunately John only ships within the UK nowadays.  But I have heard that if you sign up at OSG and post 50 times, you'll be allowed into their classifieds, which apparently has a lot of staytrems flowing through there.  I don't know why they do this. I guess to mitigate riff raff, but I didn't stick around 50 posts.  The mastery is really nice of course too, but too rich for my blood.  Staytrem as been solid.

side note: Don't know if you can notice in the last picture but one of my straplock strap buttons is completely stripped!  I watched a simple video online about cramming 1 or 2 toothpicks in there, cutting to length, then screwing the button back in.  Looked super easy in the YT vid, just need to re-up on wooden toothpicks.

edit: while you're at that link, look at some of the beautiful JMJM mods in that thread!  Really sweet rigs.

ahh shit edit #2: I assumed you were asking about the staytrem but maybe you're asking about the tremolo tailpiece?  That's a big part of the value of the JMJM...swap the tailpiece to the vintage made in USA, I think  "Pat # 2972923"...that and upgrade the bridge and you're basically not far off from a Made in USA Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster. It's an insanely good value with relatively inexpensive mods.

  • I've got a JM JM too, mine is more or less stock....I loved it out of the box but was forced to change the nut when mine cracked and I put locking tuners on it.  I've got a huge JM bias, but I love this guitar.  It's definitely the best value guitar out there...I've got two different MIM JM's and this one (made in China) and I can't say that the JM JM is worse than either of them.

  • I bought a CV Jaguar today :)   I had to put it into quarantine for a few days for Covid reasons - I bought it used, and the seller handled the case and guitar without washing his hands.  I don't want to risk seeing what Lysol might do to the finish so I'm just going to set it aside for a few days.
