Rona DEATHsantis sent armed police in to fired COVID statistician Rebekah Jones house this morning and confiscated her computer and cell phone. This is the lady who has continued reporting COVID numbers after being fired for not cooking them to make Florida better.
Good news. An FDA panel has recommended approval of the Pfizer covid vaccine for emergency authorization!
Bad news. My roommate has been in close contact with someone who tested positive. His foreman at work, who he rides with all day just got a positive result today, after feeling poor on Monday. His infant child tested positive yesterday, and his result came back today. My roommate spent a couple hours in the truck with him Monday wearing masks. He is going to wait until Monday to get tested, as the guidance is to wait 5-7 days after exposure to get tested. He is feeling find so far. This provides me with a good excuse to skip our ill advised family Christmas party on Sunday though.
Honestly got a little dusty in the room watching this. It's been a long fucking year and to see people in our country actually starting to get vaccinated is really hopeful.
Please make sound decisions for your family, friends and neighbors. We are rounding a corner, please keep your guards up and don't be, or be the cause of, the last death/hospitalization/spreader event.
We lost my uncle to ALS last week up in New York, a lot of the extended family down here in Florida. One of my cousins down here is coordinating a second memorial service at her church down here because her father (brother number 3) was pushing for it, so now my 73 year old dad has to wrestle with what to do. Our family has been so good about not getting together and kept covid scares to a minimum all year despite being a close knit family... I have no idea why my cousin and uncle are pushing for this now of all times. My aunt who lost her freaking husband even has plans to hold another service next year for everyone once covid passes so this secondary service now is completely pointless. My dad feels like he has to go, and has committed to us to just stay outside the chapel, but I hate that my uncle and cousin have put him in this position. And now we feel the need to mask up and go there to stand outside with him to make sure no one tries to bully him into going inside. I feel like I'm losing my goddamned mind right now.
@mharmless That's a tough position to be in. I've skipped a couple of funerals this year, to the disappointment of my family. No one so close as a sibling though. That has to be a tough call. I'm sorry for your lost.
On a brighter note, my roommate got his COVID test results back on Wednesday. He's negative, so crisis averted!
Also, I had a strange dream last night that through some confluence of mismanaged events I was offered a COVID vaccine much earlier than I should be allowed. In my dream, it was literally going to be wasted if I didn't take it. For some reason I had reservations. IRL, I have every intention of receiving the vax ASAP when it becomes available to ordinary low risk people. Such is the nature of dreams.
Our ICU has been waiting to hear word on when we'll be getting our vaccine since the other units and the higher ups have been getting it. Turns out they forgot about us. So we'll still be getting it but not for another week or so. Just really irritating to be forgotten
@Dee@Teresa from Concord Its funny because our hospital system bought us in the 90s when my dad was a nurse in the same ICU I'm in now and he always said that our building was the bastard child of the hospital. But literally, they forgot about us so.... lol all good though. I feel very grateful that we're able to get the vaccine, I know there are a lot of other essential workers that don't get the acknowledgement. I wish I could skip my place in line to get my husband, parents or daughter vaccinated but its a start.

I remember back in March when all this started, our emergency department manager and director got hospital-provided scrubs a week before doctors, nurses and techs did. Irritating indeed! Don’t know if it makes me feel worse or better that stuff like this happens everywhere. Hang in there.
So I don't post much about personal things, but I work for a county in Northern California. I am a Deputy with our county's Public Guardian office. Essentially I handle conservatorships/guardianships for adults who are physically/mentally unable to manage their estate and/or healthcare decisions. If no family or anyone else is willing to help our office steps in and I am their legal decision-maker as far as the court is concerned.
All of that to say I need to approve all medications and healthcare stuff for my clients. About a week and a half ago, I had the pleasure of signing the first consent documentation for a client in our county to receive the vaccine (this person is in a skilled nursing facility, so high risk, and on the first tier to get the vaccine). It was very satisfying and exciting.
Strong feelings, one way or the other, about new strategies to get all of the doses out asap, not reserving second doses? Seems to be in favor by England and both current and upcoming US Presidential administrations.
Initial results from an Israeli vaccine study suggest the first Pfizer shot reduces infections by 50% in 14 days. I think 50% reduction in 1 million might be better than 95% in 500k, and thats only relevant IF manufacturing can't keep up.

Given the way every has seemed to go, it seems like a risk of encouraging more bad behavior once people get the first dose vs assuring them they'll get both. There are already going to be people who are too cavalier on dose one when they shouldn't be. I'm not an epidemioligist, but the ones I've been reading have trended against it because it's another half measure.
Biden's plan is 100M people vaccinated in his first 100 days. THAT is ambitious. I hope we are able to hit it. That is 2M / day once it's ramped up enough for significant amounts of people to be getting the second dose. When we have more vaccine's approved, some of which are single dose vaccines, that pace will slow down some.
I imagine with adults running the program, we will see coordination. Availability of the 2-dose vaxs will only be alleviated once we have one or more single dose options available.
I dont hear anyone talking about this, but what if someone gets the first vaccine dosage but has to wait beyond the the 3 week window to receive the 2nd. Does the vaccine’s effectiveness decrease? Will the vacxine protect you at all? Biden is on this mission to get vaccines administered but I dont hear anyone talking about people who are completely vaccinated vs people only receiving the first dose but not the second. The goal sjould not be merely to get vaccines administered, but to get frontline workers, nursing homes, the elderly and those with comorbids completely vaccinated and then gradually proceed to rest of the population. Am I making sense? Please Someone smarter than me talk me off the fucking ledge?

I think this is where there is a question for the best way to disperse the vaccine. Based on what I have read, after the first dose of Moderna there is about an 80% efficacy. After the second that bumps up to 95%. To me, getting that initial one to as many people as possible is paramount (if what I have read is true anyway). 80% efficacy is not a small amount.
When I got mine, I was told that anytime after the 28 days (with Moderna) I could receive my second vaccination, just not before. I have not heard anything about the vaccine's effectiveness decreasing. I am counting down the days for my second one, but if what I wrote was true, knowing that I am 80% of the way there makes me feel quite a bit better.

I am not an epidemiologist so I could easily be wrong about how those results would graph out.

Pfizer's numbers are different, I am assuming.
