I very much enjoyed S3. This show is one of my favorites now - I am not sure why exactly. The acting is often average at best, especially with the adult characters. The plot wavers from some fairly hard-hitting family dynamics to cheesy one-dimensional villainy and plot-developments. The story lines are repetitive and kind of soapy - how many high stakes All-Valley tournaments can there be before it gets old? But... I absolutely love it. The central relationships are solid. Johnny and Miguel's father-son type bond is great and I love their scenes together - there is a concert scene in particular this season that left me with a big smile on my face. Also the relationship is made bittersweet with the Robby character always on the sidelines. I liked the ending this season, I liked where most of the characters are going, and they have some good buildup for the future without the bonkers ending of S2.
I just wanted to gush a little without getting too spoilery so I will stop now. A fun binge show for new years weekend. I hope it stays popular - looks like there will be one more season at least.
I definitely give this show a pass on stuff I woyld decry on other shows. Its just so mush fun, so shamelessly leaning into the nostalgia, yet still getting strong performances, especially out of Xolo Maruduena and William Zabka. I just dont know how much nostalgia is left to squeeze of this franchise without it devolving into self parody.
the pacing was a bit slow for me to start, but it picked up steam. in the middle of the season now and like previous seasons, love the Johnny and Miguel dynamic. works so well. looking forward to finishing it.
