The Baldies 2020 discussion

I noticed there wasn't a thread for the Baldies yet, so I figured I'd start one. I haven't listened to anything yet, but there doesn't seem to be any videos posted. Is this the first podcast only Baldies, or are the videos still incoming?

  • I completely missed the listener vote this year :( Was there an email or a forum thread? I was surprised that there was not a single mention of "I May Destroy You" in any of the categories, in my opinion the best drama (and biggest miss) this year. I don't know any other show like it, really thought provoking.

I tried @MFG! I voted for that show every time I could! I thought it was brilliant and criminally underrated.

I never saw the voting open either. It wasn’t on the website. I don’t hear a date called out during Lunchtime. I even listened to one or two rebroadcast and it was a coming soon message.

Others knew but not sure how.

It was mentioned in the deliberations for biggest miss around the 23 minute mark.

I will say, if anyone here has Twitter and does not follow Bald Move, it is very helpful to do so.  I’m finding that’s where most things are posted lately.

100% refuse to use Twitter so I hope they market in more than one place.

Yea that's where I saw the voting link too, I don't think they put a sticky on the forums like in past years.
  • The videos are now posted on the Baldmove YouTube channel!

  • They definitely should put it in the forums for the people who pay for the vip. I’m like others above and don’t have tweeter.
  • How did the actors of Better Call Saul not even make it into the deliberations? Major oversight or maybe I missed it.

Like every other award show, Bob Odenkirk and Rhae Seehorn are snubbed!

Yea I get that ARon didn't watch this season, but would've liked to see Jim go to bat for Saul.

I apologize for insufficiently marketing the Baldies poll this year. I thought twitter + 3 weeks of housekeeping would be enough, but I should have posted something to the forums as well. The number of responses was much lower this year and that's on me.

This is a good place to float the idea... Jim and I are thinking of moving the Baldies to "around" april 1st.  Doing all of our end of year business work + baldies + groundhog day is getting to be to much for January to contain. The Oscars typically go down in late April, so we'd line up more with traditional awards season, having it on April Fool's Day would be funny AF, and we'd have much more time to actually improve the show and process. Thoughts?

PS: Eligibility window would be the same. This would also be better, because we did deliberations without having seen the final episode of The Expanse (we later saw it and decided it didn't really effect the results). Pushing the ceremony back to April would give shows premiering in December (which is becoming a thing!) a more fair shot.

Also, all video is now up. Jim had some sort of snafu with the video editing that caused them to be delayed.

I like the idea, especially if it means not overworking yourself at the beginning of the year.
Also - snazzy new graphics in the video this year!  :)
  • I have to say, with streaming I have a really hard time remembering what came out in 2020 and what I just happened to watch in 2020.

Except Twin Peaks, which I'm watching for the first time. I'm pretty certain that didn't come out in 2020.

To be honest I'm not sure there would as much interest in a year end wrap up way out in April. Most media outlets are posting their top ten lists or whatever in December so if you get much past January I could see a drop off in engagement.

Personally I'd still vote and listen in April (and maybe most of your typical Baldies audience is the same) but my memory of what I watched the previous year might start to get fuzzy!

Also - I think the Oscars are usually in February, this year is delayed due to the pandemic.

  • @Jim @A_Ron_Hubbard ; FYI, the Deliberations 2 video is a duplicate of the Deliberations 1 video. So I'm pretty sure the Best Comedy, Biggest Disappointment, and Best Debut/Pilot deliberations are missing, unless they are included in one of the other videos.

I heard @A_Ron_Hubbard mention moving the Baldies to April and that the Oscars are held in April. The Oscars are actually held in February, with 2021 being an exception. The Golden Globes are in early January. So I'm not sure the level of interest by April.

    did you mean late February?

edit: for this year at least. gonna assume you meant pre-2021.

Yes - pre COVID the Golden Globes are January and the Oscars February. I’m assuming post-COVID herd immunity will be the same.
  • I finally finished the ceremony and deliberations, and just wanted to let Jim and Aron know that I really appreciate the time and effort they put into this. Award shows are stupid and arbitrary, but I look forward to watching the hours and hours deliberations every year. It's unironically some of my favorite Bald Move content. There's just something very satisfying about seeing their thought process, and how they prioritize one aspect of a show over another. I also just love lists and rankings on a very base, left brain, level. So keep up the good work, guys!!

Also, Aron is a bad person for not catching up on Better Call Saul and ranking it higher, and he should feel bad.

I'm kind of new hear. So maybe I am missing something. But other than the obvious joke, what is the point of doing Groundhog Day every year. It's a mediocre movie at best? That could save some time.

They don’t do Groundhog Day every year.  They did it the first year, 24 hrs of watching Groundhog Day on Groundhog Day.  All donations went to charity.  Every year since, they’ve done a 24 hr marathon on or near Groundhog Day, with a different theme (one year it was all the Star Wars movies, one year was all disaster movies, etc) with a different charity each year.  Considering the fact that they’ve raised between $50,000-$75,000 since (and including) that first year, and it’s considered one of the favorite/most anticipated events of the year by a large percentage of the fans, it’s definitely not a waste of time.

  • @TangoNevada. I think Groundhog Day is an amazing movie and an all time classic. Why do you say it's mediocre?
