Here's Negan (spoilers)

Anyone else subscribed to AMC's channel extension like me and got to see the "Here's Negan" episode? Thought it was very well done, and arguably the best episode out of the extra six and arguably the best backstory episode. Thoughts?

    Fire/heat doesn't kill walkers, so unless the house collapsed from the fire...

    I can see why the episode would appeal to a lot of people but I only found the scene where Negan left against his wife's wishes compelling.  Otherwise just seemed like fan service hurting any attempt at storytelling.  Did the leather jacket need a backstory with twists and turns? Did barcode need a backstory?  Every attempt to invoke the Saviors-era Negan reminds me of TWD sucking for seasons like few other shows have ever sucked before.  Just not for me; I liked some of the quieter parts of the other extra six episodes, showing a world moving on from human civilization and the few remaining humans wandering through it.

    I can definitely agree with some of those points. A bit ham fisted as it were during certain scenes. I could take or leave the savior chick showing up, maybe they could have snuck in a decent actor for a guest appearance. I think I still stand by my statement that its the best one off backstory episode the series has dispensed, but perhaps that's only because they have been building negan up this whole time.

    The walker which attacked Eugene in the future bullet factory had a molten metal "helmet", so I'm going to have to disagree. 

    If one goes back through TWD show also there's walkers on fire moving around and walkers still moving after being covered in melted glass/plastic from a greenhouse fire. https://the-walking-dead-tvseries.fandom.com/wiki/Always_Accountable

    We've seen walkers still active after sitting outside for years and active after being in water or buried for long periods of time.  Add to that resistance to fire/heat (and presumably they recover from being frozen) and perhaps we can say only puncturing/smashing the brain kills a walker.  TWD does often play by the rule of horror that whatever's most terrifying happens, such as walkers eating something leave it and go after someone moving past.  It's more terrifying if you can't burn/drown/bury walkers and kill them but have to hit the brain somehow.

    And let’s be honest with the show. They do as they please to make cool scenes. Molten head zombie was cool as hell but doesn’t make walkers fireproof in the world

    Zombies used to use rocks in the show..I don’t think they take their what zombies can and can’t do as hard rules

    Can you point me to an episode or clip of a walker dying from fire in a scene?

    Molten head zombie + greenhouse zombies + other zombies walking around on fire does provide evidence for a reasonable hypothesis.

    IMO they've been pretty consistent about needing to stab/smash the brain.

    ETA: Making fire not kill walkers makes the show more consistent, given everything else which doesn't kill walkers.  So 'fire/heat does not kill walkers' might actually be in the show bible.

    Perhaps the rocks thing was a Darabont(?) interpretation of walkers versus the 9 seasons since of a slightly different interpretation.

    I don’t have time to watch the show to prove myself so I’ll happily concede on this one. Although I swear there were fried zombies in cars. But that would have also been season1 or 2 so yea. Interpretation thing.

     I heard them praise your work on the podcast.  Is there any easy way to get a copy of your previous work or do I need to go to Madripoor’s Low Town to get it?

    I actually liked this episode.  We’ve all (well, mostly all) wondered/pondered how Negan became Negan & what his life was like before the apocalypse, before the leather jacket & bat.  I don’t mind if any of it was considered fan-servicey - I thought the story was well-told and heartbreakingly acted by JDM and his wife and a good episode to end the season on.

    Amen to that. Kind of brilliant that they had his own wife play Lucille, really makes the water works they put on display very authentic. Plus they pull a lost on us and go back to before the apocalypse which I have been screaming for this show to do for seasons now. It's cheaper (no set dressing and no zombies) and it serves as a much better way to delve into a characters backstory and how they have "changed". Much more show, and less tell in my opinion.

    I'm not sure the choice to structure the story as a Matryoshka doll of flashbacks entirely worked, but overall it was a strong episode, I thought. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was predictably good, as was his wife (and her series of excellent wigs). Honestly, overall I'd say the "bonus episodes" experiment worked out pretty well for them, considering it's almost the literal definition of filler. At least they had an excuse this time.

    Some news along with it: the final season premieres August 22. Good news for Jim and A.Ron, as it means they have more than enough time to get caught up. They can even take breaks and cover the bonus episodes individually, like they originally planned to. (They may have already discussed this, I haven't listened to all of the 1008 cast yet).
