Mare of Easttown SPOILERS

edited May 2021 in Other TV
Is anyone watching this on HBO? It’s only 2 episodes in but it feels like something really special. It took me no time at all to get hooked into this. Kate Winslet is just immediately excellent right out of the gate and I guarantee she’ll win the Emmy. The writing is so damn good. SO GOOD.

  • I'm really liking it so far, I'm also penciling in Kate Winslet as an early Emmy favorite (and hopefully a Baldie). She does everything! Eat breakfast sandwiches and hoagies, limp around, brood, get drunk, spit pate into a napkin, top-notch accent work ... and so on.

Thought her chemistry with Evan Peters in the second episode was fun, and her scene with the doctor about her son was very effecting. The show has done a ton of world building in two episodes, without a lot of exposition, just putting us in the middle of the lives of this family and community and building from there.

The score is noticably great as well, definitely enhances the show.

Kate Winslet did an interview with the Watch guys at the Ringer, was a fun listen since they're both from Philly.

I am really into this. We (my wife and I, I’m not Gollum) are definitely into this after the first episode. It was so dark though we kinda took a breather before episode 2. Kate is crushing it. I wish more people would check this out.

I'm definitely going to check this out but when they were talking about it on The Watch I thought they were saying "Mayor of East Town" and it's just Mare? How can you put a word that sounds that close to mayor that close to town. Rural Juror ass name.

I’m pretty surprised that there’s not more “This show is great but the title is sucks” noise out there.

I thought the title was fun, like the HK police movie Infernal Affairs.

The Still Watching podcast mentioned this show is borrowing some common British crime show tropes (Looks to me like "policewoman deals with personal/family issues while solving crimes" and "everyone in this small town has secrets"), so if you like this there's a bunch more like it to watch.  Certainly when I heard Mare say she was a Detective Sergeant it felt like a deliberate nod.

So far I am not thrilled with the show (I'm a huge fan of some British crime shows but not so much the everyone has secrets subgenre) but will watch to the end to see how well the formula works in the US.

If you enjoy the show but haven't tried British crime shows, there's a lot you may enjoy, have fun finding ones you like!

Joanna Robinson is covering this show on Still Watching and she spells out "Mare" at the beginning of each episode, I assume for this very reason.

For sure, this feels very much like a British crime show. Happy Valley is the first one that came to mind for me (which everyone should check out if they haven't already).

Great show, made greater by the fact that A.Ron plays the ex-husband.

@bizmarkiefader Thanks for mentioning the Watch podcast coverage of the show; it's a good compliment to the Still Watching coverage.

  • As a DELCO girl born and bred, I can't wait to see this and hope the guys cover it in some way.  I know Kate Winslet went to great lengths to perfect it, so I'm kinda excited/cringing to hear her take on the Dirty DELCO accent. It's pretty much universally ridiculed by all who hear it so we need a champion lol. Please don't judge us for our shitty accent and love of hoagies

Was just reading an article about how much she worked on the accent, will be curious to hear how good of a job she does:

And I would never judge someone for loving hoagies!

  • Just watched the first 3 episodes last night and what a show this has been already. Kate Winslet is amazing in this role and I'm sure will be nominated for an Emmy. I'm assuming this is a limited series so she'll be going up against Anya Taylor-Joy for lead actress in a limited series. There has been some real tough competition in the limited series category for several years and I feel this year will be no different.

Is there an existing discussion of British crime series?  I searched but didn't find one.  Might be nice for folks who like this to have suggestions in a separate discussion of what to watch/binge between episodes of this show.

I keep hearing about Happy Valley and Broadchurch. Both on my list.

Just caught up, what a great show. The dialogue is so natural, it sort of reminds me of Halt and Catch Fire the way they handle conflict. It's nice to have a weekly Sunday night drama again.

Please tell me y’all saw this SNL sketch last night and please tell me it cracked y’all up also. Watched it again today and still cracks me up! Haha

That was pretty good, thanks for sharing @cdrive. I've already shared it with 3 or 4 other people I know that watch the show.

The show sure spends a lot of time with Siobhan but I don’t know if Hollywood is ready for a return of the Psycho Lesbian trope.  ETA that's assuming Erin's death wasn't caused by the person we see in the van with Missy Sager.
  • Lol at the family meeting and Mare barging into the therapist's office.

Glad that they are able to work those light moments in because goddamn there was some depressing and harrowing stuff in this episode (Dylan walking over to the baby with the pillow before comforting him, gahhh), but still super compelling.

Not sure how I feel about the big bad apparently being a serial predator with a dungeon, but willing to give the show leeway to see how it deals with it.

Maybe at this point the OP could add "Spoilers" to the title?

I think it's interesting the police have Mare's gun and will likely soon have Dawn's gun once Freddie screws up again (likely with tragic consquences). Will one of them turn out to be the gun used on Erin?

I'm all in on this show but the stuff with Siobhan plot with the lady at the radio station feels like it's from a CW drama, especially last night. Every other scene feels so natural.

The grandma getting hit in the face by the door and getting knocked out gave me "kid falling on the treadmill in Dexter" vibes

  • Mare’s reaction to her mother in the stretcher was classic and right on. Winslet and Smart’s are so damn good. I did eye roll a little when Sioban had the drama with her ex and the DJ, but it was still amusing. Sioban is one of my favorite characters, its too bad she doesn’t get enough screen time.
  • I'm enjoying it, but it might be having too much going on. Solving a mystery murder is enough for some shows, but not this one. They also throw in two love triangles and a custody fight. Hopefully they can end this satisfactorily.

It’s part of the formula of some British crime shows such as Broadchurch or The Bay which inspired this US version.
  • This show has been pretty damn riveting. It's not perfect but it sure hits on the emotional points. When Dylan grabbed the pillow my heart just sank. Jean Smart is amazing in this and I'm glad they put in a character like hers for some comic relief. Her playing fruit ninja in earlier episodes is just comical.

I am 99% certain that Erin's murder is not related to Missy or Katie. I think her uncle is connected somehow (baby daddy? murderer?) And I can't help but hope Siobhan and her documentary have a bigger part to play. I like her character but so far her girlfriend issues storyline seems a bit out of place.

Also her hiding the ice cream in the bag of frozen veggies was pretty great.
