Crazy theory and forgive me on names, but I think the killer is the son of Mare’s friend (cousin of Erin) and the dad/uncle helped cover it up... uncle is taking blame because he’s being blackmailed by the father who knows he’s the father of Erin’s baby.

Probably way off base.
I like it, very plausible and does track with everything seen on screen. In that case is the affair of his father a way of hiding the much larger awful truth. Can a 12yo boy be that duplicitous?

Possible that the father told him to say it to help cover when the mom found them whispering, likely about the murder/cover-up. Would track with the mom saying she didn’t suspect the affair this time as opposed to the prior time.
I'm not reading the whole thread yet cause I just started watching and am only on episode three, but there's NO WAY a kid in what is supposed to be a poor town has a PRISTINE 1970 Bronco. A bronco in that good of shape is going for north of $40,000 at LEAST, and if it had lived in this town for its whole life it would be a rusting mess from salt and snow lol.
Anyway, show is great so far, that was just REALLY bothering me.
On the 'Still
Watching' pod, they read out a theory from none other than Bald Move
hero, Damon Lindelof to the effect that Erin’s murderer was the basketball
player defending Mare when she made that historic clutch shot. No messing.
It was exciting to learn Lindelof is a fan of the show and Joanna. And I’m not gonna lie. I thought about emailing the guys and using this as a “see - you are missing a great show cause Lindelof loves it” moment.

It might not be way off base. I was listening to the Needs No Some Introduction podcast on this episode and they had the same theory, that it was Ryan. Their reasoning is that we've seen Ryan be furious and violent in his defense of his little sister, so it's possible he could have been provoked again if Erin was threatening to expose John as DJ's father. The way I see that happening is that maybe John took Ryan and Billy with him to the park for some reason if Erin wanted to meet there so she could give John that ultimatum (most likely threatening to expose him unless he gave her the money to pay for DJ's ear surgery). Ryan gets pissed at Erin, grabs John's gun and acts if he's going to shoot Erin, John and Billy tackle him to get the gun away from him, the gun goes off, richochets and hits Erin in the head - she has her hand up trying to hide her face and that's why the bullet took her fingertip off and grazed along her eyebrow. John and Billy are so freaked out and are trying to figure out what to do, so they come up with a plan to lay her body out along the creek and get rid of the blood covered clothes (which is why Billy was covered in blood). John pressures Billy to take the blame away from Ryan so that Ryan wouldn't get in trouble, and Billy agrees because he's freaked out and wanting to protect his family. This is also why we see John and Ryan having that private conversation (when Lori listened at the door) and John was telling Ryan it was their secret, that no one else could know.
At this point I really don't know if I believe that scenario or the one I initially thought of, but either way it's clear that the Ross brothers are guilty as hell somehow.
It's hard for me to ignore the FBI ballistics expert saying the bullet was from a Colt Detective revolver and then such a revolver being shown in the episode 7 trailer. Seems to me whoever shot Erin had to have access to that gun. While in the real world matching bullets to guns is questionable science, on TV it's almost always correct.
As far as everyone acting guilty as hell, it's almost like Everyone Has Secrets...
Joanna Robinson did a deep dive on the Ryan a s the killer theory. She's pretty good at condesing whiteboard-type speculation into a digestable article:

Not crazy at all! Ryan was my first suspect because I thought a couple of early scenes lingered on him overly much. After the last episode, this is my theory too. I also thought the way his mother ambiguously asked "is he doing it again" and only ever told Mare there was an affair seemed suspicious. I'm not sure how that would fit in, but I wonder if Ryan's secret was something different than his father cheating.
Not a spoiler. It’s been years since I had a Rolling Rock. Went into the liquor store and got a very nice priced twelve pack. Told the clerk I was wanting one because of the show. He asked what it was? I told him it was a thriller mystery with the girl from Titanic but she’s old now. The other clerk thought that was hilarious and had a very good laugh. I’m just glad I could make someone laugh still. Just sayin.

So how was the Rolling Rock - as bad as you remembered?

Yeah Rolling Rock might have the biggest gulf between how appealing the bottle looks and how (not) appealing the beer is lol.

except for thw uncle being the father, YOU CALLED IT
Such a good show. That moment in the car with Lori and Mare was so visceral and heartbreaking, but honestly, I think Mare saved Lori’s family and I think Lori understands that at least a little by the end. If Mare had kept the truth secret, I think the guilt would have eaten Ryan alive, especially as he watched his dad serve hard time for his crime. This way, John and Billy will probably both be out after a short sentence, and Ryan may also get out after a few years. I do believe that it was an accident that happened after some poor decisions by an emotional kid. So while Lori’s family may never be the same, they may all at least find some peace and it could have been so much worse. For as dark as the show was at times, I really appreciated the healing and hopefulness that seemed to be happening by the end.
Two small quibbles: first, it seemed like the gun wasn’t gone long enough for Mr. Carroll to have noticed it but okay, and second, Dylan’s threats to Jess seemed a little overblown. He didn’t seem to want to be a dad to DJ when he thought he was, and the DNA test had already proved he wasn’t, so I don’t really understand why it was important to him to destroy her journals and to threaten Jess like he did.
Overall, I thought this was very well done and had excellent performances across the board.
I don’t think John will be getting out of prison any time soon. Does moving the body make him accessory to murder? Then he’s got perjury, obstruction of justice, rape, and possibly attempted murder or conspiracy to commit murder with his plan to shoot Billy.

Given the murder charge, would Mare/Easttown have bothered with the charges relating to Billy? (Aside: I think conspiracy requires more than one person; maybe you're thinking of premeditated murder?) In front of a jury John could make a case for being a father protecting his young son "who caused a tragic accident" WRT all the accessory after the fact charges. But the rape charge would sink him.
Good episode, and good series. I liked how this episode sets up to be mostly repercussions after John's "admission" and turns into the final investigation/unraveling of the mystery. It'll be interesting to see if folks try some British crime shows after this.

The night Ryan took the gun is the night Nr. Carrol went to get it and noticed it missing because they had seen the "prowler" - which was after Ryan stole it but before he returned it - a small window of time, but I'll go with it. Then he went to look again a number of days later and the gun was back.
The whole scene of Mare realizing it was Ryan was heartbreaking, I like that the show didn't play it as a gotcha twist, instead just Mare coming to a really sad realization and knowing what she has to do.
Mare's conversation with Mr. Carrol about loss not ever hurting less, but learning to live with the unacceptable, was also very good (and sad!).
Add Julianne Nicholson to the list of actors who should get nominated for this show, holy shit her scenes this episode were so good, the emotional core of the conclusion.

There can't be a conspiracy to commit a crime with only 1 person, so you're right that wouldn't be an applicable charge. Nor would attempted murder, as he didn't actually attempt to murder Billy - that would require shooting and missing. However, he could get assault (not battery) with a dangerous weapon, brandishing, or something similar. That being said, those would all be tacked on, as statutory rape of a niece is gonna sink him (actually, did we know her age?).
And yeah, depending on the state accessory after the fact might be on the table.

I don't know that we ever knew Erin's age other than the family reunion happened in 2017 didn't it.
Wouldn't some kind of aiding and abetting come into play as well in regards to John covering for his son. For that matter Billy and John's wife as well right?
Ah didn’t realize conspiracy requires more than one person. So even though he had a plan to murder Billy, and took steps toward enacting that plan (by taking him to the woods and aiming his gun at him) there’s no crime except brandishing?
Really enjoyed the ending to this show. This show isn't as stylistic and thrilling as Sharp Objects and True Detective, but I appreciated the characters and relationships so much more. I like that we got to know the victim before the death, and Mare was more than just a gritty anti-hero detective. From the first episode she was trying to help people instead of just kicking ass and making arrests, and she was constantly vulnerable and in pain despite also being a very tough character. Hope we get to see more shows like this in the future.

If the murder had happened, it would make the murder planned (premeditated) instead of being spontaneous (unpremeditated). Premeditated murder is a more serious crime.
This was the exact amount of darkly funny and adult show that I very much needed after months of Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, WandaVision, and TFATWS.
I loved all of those things, but it was also really fun to return to the land of the adults for 7 weeks and watch a really compelling and superbly acted series that will wind up winning all the awards.
Real bummer how dismissive A. Ron has been of the whole thing but there were ultimately a handful of other great podcasts to make up for it.
This is one of the better season/series finales I’ve seen in a long time.

If I had to guess he'll give Mare a second try before he gives FTWD a second try.
Speaking of great podcasts covering it, The Watch had an episode about the final Mare episode and then another episode with a second interview with Kate Winslet, who it turns out listened to The Watch coverage after her first interview with them on an early (first?) episode of their coverage. Speaks well of their coverage (not to take away from any other podcast coverage) that she asked to go back on.

Literally listening to the 2nd Kate episode right now. The amount of work and detail that went into this show is more fascinating with every passing interview I read/listen to.
Joanna Robinson of course had wonderful coverage of it over on Vanity Fair too, but it’s definitely cool that Kate specifically asked to come back on to The Watch to tell those guys how much she enjoyed their coverage. That must have been such a cool moment for them.

Nice if fluff article. Has no spoilers and has a funny fan theory for who killed Erin.
