I just did one of those list things on Facebook where we had to name our top 25 albums from the 90's - this one made my list :)

  • I forgot to post this here earlier, the lastest and last single off Softcult's debut EP.  Expect another EP soon-ish (end of Summer-ish).  This song is the least like the others, but it's also my favourite :)

I know I am going to sound super un-cool and old as hell considering this is like three years after she made it huge but I just checked out Billie Eilish for the first time this week and her album "When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go" is fucking fantastic. I had heard Bad Guy before but that was probably about it.

The production on the album is so, so good. And this just in, she has a fantastic voice. And I gotta say, some of these lyrics, while odd that it comes from a 17 year old girl are very good and it actually pulls on the heart strings towards the end as she is blatantly talking about suicide, mental health, love, etc.

I just always turned my head because I have never been a big pop music guy but I cannot recommend this album highly enough. My car doesn't have the best soundsystem in the world but listening to See Me In A Crown blasting is quite nice. Did not expect such heavy bass throughout the album. And the way it is used is awesome.

This is the 2nd back to back backyard happy hour sesh down an old school Aimee Mann rabbit hole. She doesn’t get enough flowers man she’s so under appreciated. I’m With Stupid is so fuckin good!

edit: oh wow a buddy learned me up just now on The Both, with Aimee and Ted Leo. Funny how stuff whiffs right by me! She could sing the phone book to me.

I'm leaving for Seattle in a few weeks with my nieces, and got some random inspiration to listen to some old grunge today.  Currently listening to a playlist of Alice in Chain's best songs.

If that makes you super un-cool, I guess I'm in that club too (not that there was much debate before this revelation. Ha!). I'll admit that I like some stuff more than other stuff and I did start to check out a bit at points with the whole record, but there is some f'n amazing stuff on that, particularly given her age. I kind of hope we're onto the next iteration of Fiona Apple's career. Totally different sound, but she kind of evokes it to me. Bad Guy is a fuckin monster.

(wrote this yesterday, but I guess I didn't hit send.)

That's so funny. I just went down an I'm With Stupid hole a week or two ago. It had been too long and goddamn if it didn't hit just right.  Totally agree about the 'singing the phone book' thing. 100%, She's amazing.

I need to go back to the Both. I listened to it when it came out and dug it, but got swept up in other stuff and kind of lost sight of it. Thanks for the reminder.

Today has been kind of an impromptu listen to solo Steve Malkmus stuff day. I've been going in order and I'm about 2/3 through Face the Truth. Man, I take for granted just how amazing this stuff is. Psyched to see Real Emotional Trash on the horizon.

Went on to get into Real Emotional Trash and holy shit! Even better than I remembered.

    @Travis nice!!!!

Confession: for The Both I just skip to the Aimee songs!  :D

It Kills on Face the Truth is probably my fav SM solo track. Sparkle Hard my fav solo album.

Last night I started getting into The Sparks thanks to a late night James Cordon interview w/ director Edgar Wright, who briefly talked about his documentary The Sparks Brothers. I had never heard of these guys ever! But they influenced so many artists I love. I dove in and was instantly fascinated.

  • Thanks for the tip about The Both. I actually remembered being a touch up and down on it, but I didn't want to say so because it had been so long and I didn't remember for sure.

I love It Kills. It has an almost modernized, different take on psych Beatles-y quality to it. Tough to put a crown on any of the solo tracks because it gets a little crowded at the top. I can say that Dragonfly Pie and Baltimore got me f'n PUMPED up the other day. I think my favorite record is probably Pig Lib but it's a total mood thing. I'm really bonded to Pig Lib though which probably factors a lot. I remember making a trip over to Amoeba before my night of rock n' roll college and being just beside myself in joy with the sound shift. I also saw the best set I caught of his solo stuff on that record. Oh man, SM&J at the El Rey was a formidable experience.

I need to really revisit Sparkle Hard, and (risking my Pavement fan card) I haven't really listened to anything passed it. Maybe we have tomorrow's dance card ready to lock.

You know who I've been thinking a lot about lately (mostly fond reminiscence of the time my wife and I caught them)? Tapes n Tapes. I think I require new Tapes n Tapes material. If you ever happen upon them in TX could you pass it onto them? I know they're from TX, but I'm not sure where. TX is pretty small, right? Kinda like Delaware? They're too good to be done with only 4 records under their belt.

@Travis are they from TX? I know they got some TX pals in Houston and Austin but they’re from Minnesota right? There was an early aughts booking group that brought them to Houston early in their days but yes they’re so good!
    Travis
  • @cdrive Hmmm.... I always believed so, but it was more word of mouth than something I actually knew. They also felt very "Austin-y" to me (not sure who is the chicken and who is the egg on that notion). (goes to Google...) Well, there it is right there. Minneapolis. Well, fuck you Romney! You made me look like a jerk! Ha!

Are there any BM folks in Minnesota? Everyone in MN knows everyone in MN, right? Kind of like Iceland.* Easy to pass it on.

Man, we saw them playing on Walk it Off at the El Rey in Los Angeles (funny, another El Rey mention) and I was really blown away. I honestly couldn't believe that so much sound was coming out of 4 people. They tore that fucker down.

    * Source Michael Lewis' "Boomerang:" "Because Iceland is really just one big family, it’s simply annoying to go around asking Icelanders if they’ve met Bjork. Of course they’ve met Bjork; who hasn’t met Bjork? Who, for that matter, didn’t know Bjork when she was two? “Yes, I know Bjork,” a professor of finance at the University of Iceland says in reply to my question, in a weary tone. “She can’t sing, and I know her mother from childhood, and they were both crazy. That she is so well known outside of Iceland tells me more about the world than it does about Bjork.”

@Chinaski pointed out that Gift Of Gab the hip hop artist passed away on another thread. I wanted to ad to this by pointing out one of my favorite albums 4th Dimensional Rocket Ship Going Up. One of the first Underground hip hop albums I bought in 2004. I listened to this album a lot on some great late night bike rides. My favorite track is Way of the Light. GOG had a lot of great tracks. His work on The Grouch and Eligh’s All In.

Do you ever just get stuck on an artist like *all* week?  That's me right now.  I know I sound like a broken 80s disco-wave record, but...I'm still bumping Erasure in my office & cruising through the morning so far. Throwing in some Alison Moyet/Yaz for extra happiness. :star:
(My dream is that she magically shows up at their concert in February but that's wishing for a miracle, lol.  But omg her voice gives me chills!  So does Andy Bell's, though.  So. so. good.)

I can get stuck on an artist but also a topic. Like this week someone on Twitter started “if you could have only 1 year of music, either 1991 or 1971, which would you choose?”  Now, 1971 has What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye, which I think is the best album ever in terms of American music. But that said, it’s still 1991 for me all day.  So I went deep down a rabbit hole this week on greatest albums of 1991.  But then I switched rabbit holes to best of ‘71.  I’m still sticking with 1991 as my final choice though.

Agreed!  '91 all day errrrryday.  '71 was great in its own right but the '80s/early '90s have a special place in my heart.

This actually happens to me quite a bit. If you ever see my listening history in weeks or months, you will see gigantic clusters for a group or two. I'm a pretty habitual, repetitive listener a great deal of the time. I can 100% relate.

@cdrive I am with you on topics too. I've actually started seeking stuff like that out to kind of force me to think about stuff more. I've been doing these sort of topical countdowns on Twitter that have been a lot of fun for that. Right now it's Top 20 songs that aren't in English, which was pretty cool because it exposed a really big blindspot for me and I did a lot of fun digging to put my list together. Anyhoo. I dig things like that in Twitter. There's also this dude who does polls of people's top 5 records for various years (a new year every two weeks). I've been really digging "topical listening."

@Travis yeah! It’s like making a mixtape based on topics. Right now I’m about to kick off a southwestern U.S. road trip so I’m thinking about that and what would be cool to play.

Just started but so far I know I need these 3 in there:

On the road again - Willie Nelson
    Route 66 - Chuck Berry
Have Guitar Will Travel - Scotty Moore Trio

Ok here is my sw roadtrip playlist so far and I’d like to now shamelessly ask for some recommendations cause I know we got some tasty takes here. And it’d make me smile on the road when a great tune comes on someone suggested that I never thought of.

Return of the Grevious Angel by Gram Parsons and Willin' either by Linda Ronstadt or Little Feat would fit the bill I think.
