Super fun; I recommend: I’ve always loved  Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie No.1. But today I felt like getting out an echo pedal and playing along side. Drop D. Masjidil Echo and a Soul Food.  Fun play along.

Weird - I've never done anything like this but now I can't wait to try it :)

New Gear Day!  My bass finally arrived and seeing it in person makes the 2 month wait totally worth it. So glad I didn’t get jumpy for another color or a short scale Mustang bass.  Ready to lay down some bass tracks!

  • 1966 Mosrite Celebrity. It's a 12 string, but I took the octave strings off, just like I did when I was a kid.

My Dad played guitar back in the 60's in his High School Band that he was a part of. Back then, they actually opened up for some bigger acts of that era. He's got some great stories about this. I found this as a young boy, sitting in our basement, all alone, in its case. I picked it up and asked if I could play with it. :As long as you don't damage it", he would say.

The guitar I grew up as a kid picking up and strumming nonsense into, grew to teaching myself and playing it every day as a High School teenager. It became a hobby and I purchased my own guitars, and started my own little collection.

As I got older I kept asking him if he would ever give it to me, since I still play. In my 20's, the answer was "nope". In my 30's, still the same answer. I hit 40, thinking he might give it up... Nope.

Last year, New Years Eve 2019, me and my lady went to celebrate with my Dad and Stepmother for a few cocktails, he surprised me and brought it out. He told me I could have it.

Oh, the feels I had. Tears and hugs. What a man. I will cherish this forever.

Wish I knew how to copy and paste a pic, but at a loss...must be missing something...

Well this is super fucking exciting and unexpected.  Had a roof guy come out. (Yay we need a new roof; it’s time). So our homeowner association keeps a tight account of the solid dudes, and this is our local neighborhood roof hero. We meet today and we both look very similar, wild ass hair under caps and crazy beards.  We shoot the shit about when we bought in the neighborhood and yada yada about some old band mates in the hood that bought back then too and come to find out this guy plays and builds pedals.

I already know this guy is strongly vouched for and so he asks to check out my guitar and so I invite him in from the heat and he does the thing when someone lets you play their guitar. Plays very well. Not a bullshitter. And immediately we’re just talking for 20 minutes about pedals and amps like Peter-bumping buddies.

He’s going to fix what’s wrong with my EHX Small Stone, so he comes back to grab it when he’s near our section again AND he drops me off one of his builds seen below. Like for free, for keeps. Not sure what it is yet cause we we were bouncing around a bunch of ideas cause he makes tons of dIfferent things in batches.  We talked about a phase 90, nah I got phase...then a klon clone with a booster, but too many knobs...might be that but then we talked custom uni-vibe...I think it’s a customized phaser / uni-vibe.  Invited me to drop in and play with his buddies on one of their Thursday rehearsals and to their latest blues gig at this local bar. Haha.  I just might. Looking forward to powering this thing up!

Update: IT’S A CUSTOM UNI-VIBE CLONE! so fucking cool man. I have 0 chorus pedals so this is so rad. I love the light on the foot switch and then the top led oscillates to the speed.  Sheeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Ok conclusion: this pedal fucking smokes dude. I had 0 chorus pedals and now I have this super chorus on steroids / multi-trick pony.

I peeked at the guts and found out what it is.

So it’s a Mad Bean Florist Chorus,  a custom circuit based off the Little Angel Chorus known in the pedal building community.

    https://www.madbeanpedals.com/projects/_folders/FilterMod/pdf/Florist.pdf

Here is a demo of someone else’s build:
    https://youtu.be/MtJlY1jtkCM

Here’s one on Reverb right now for $80 bucks if anyone has the itch:
    https://reverb.com/item/38996038-mad-bean-florist-chorus-2020-blue

So I guess I can jam out some Medicine - Time Baby III now!

I've never heard one before, but that demo sounds pretty cool...I think I could make some noise with that :)

Just a beginner but I got a crunchy Orange practice amp used. Looking to get a peddle with a heavy doom metal crunch.

I'd recommend a Rat.  They aren't too expensive (maybe $100?) and they come up used fairly often.  It's definitely a popular choice for doom metal and it's pretty easy to use & get good sounds out of it.

What are you looking to spend or hoping to spend? You can get Rat knock off for as cheap as $30 like the Mosky Black Rat…but a new ProCo Rat 2 is only $70.  That’s a solid 1st distortion pedal, especially for doom. Also a Big Muff Pi is a solid doom pedal.  They go for $60 used on reverb. For a new Big Muff, I like the smaller Op-Amp reissue. That goes new for $90.

Alright the florist chorus made it on the board as well as the soul food.  A tough decision to take the fuzzrite off.  A much easier decision to take off the 2 Chinese knock offs of the Klon and Rat…they kinda sounded like shit to be honest. Muddy.  The Soul Food sounds soooo good.

  • I put together this mini board because I've been going to my brother's house and playing with my niece lately.  The open spot on the end is where I put my tuner (which is on my main board now that I'm at home):

That makes me want to grab some old leftover wood from the garage rafters and make a tight b-side board. Your non-main board is pretty decadent!  How is the blue sky not on the main board!?

My main board is under construction but is slowly evolving into a shoegaze board and my shoegaze-reverb needs are being met by a (borrowed) Keeley Realizer.  I'm actually at a bit of a crossroads with my main board. I'm currently using a Voodoo Lab "Medium" Dingbat board which is 22x13.5 inches but I think I want to shrink it down to a Pedaltrain Classic Jr which is 18x12.5.  That might make the only person in the world who wants to convert their board to a shoegaze board and make it smaller (ha!) but I have this idea/dream of getting 'the right' pedal for each effect that I want - sort of limit my space and force me to make some tough choices.

  • I am a retired guitar tech, that did all kinds of custom wiring and switching, mostly for Strats. I have a shitload of parts, tools for fret jobs, radius sanding boards for frets, Pots, Mega Switches, Custom Rotary switches, caps, knobs you name it I have it. Parts that I no longer have a need for, enough to open a guitar repair shop. If anyone is interested, let's talk mastervolume101@gmail.com.

Rounded up the microphone fam today:

Used to have some SM57s back in the day but they got too beat up. They had a good run. Also felt I had a few more SM58s but I think they might have walked.

I was chatting with a buddy talking mics and keyboards, and how he might buy this Korg cx3 digital tone wheel. Now my 5 yr old recently got way into all the keyboards on GarageBand on his iPad, so I was like ‘hey…I got an old m-audio 61 key midi controller with the sustain pedal and a stand..’ let’s fire that puppy up! It took a usb to lightning adapter and, kind of a struggle, but got it to work finally running through a powered usb hub. Voila! Keyboard! For my ears and what I do now and for the amount of money, can’t beat it. So I tried to encourage my bud to maybe try that out before getting a big ass expensive one-dimensional keyboard. Anyway that’s what’s happening lately.

Boys weekend. Wife is at a bachelorette party weekend.  I restrung my acoustic last night and 6 yr old wanted to play keyboard so I promised him we could have music day on Saturday. 9 yr old said we should start a band. I said “ugh how far do y’all wanna take this cause Dad has gear…”

And so may I introduce to you “Electric Dragon” (named by 9 yr old). We already have some album art and we’re working on our hits this afternoon.

So I’m coming out of retirement. Current guitarist for Electric Dragon.

Haha, I’ve heard quite a few guitar tones that sounded like ass but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the sound they were intentionally going for  :D

Oh man the G.A.S. has returned! My “next pedal” desire for a BOSS Harmonist PS-6 just got shoved to the side with some serious competition from Electro-Harmonix today.

    EHX’s Intelligent Harmony Machine…

guitarmonies for days. So many sweet guitarmony solos…doing the intro to The Eagles - One Of These Nights (their best song in no small part due to sweet guitarmonies)
