I love how they shot Nate for the post game interview. He actually looked like a real coach, and despite his Wonder Kid hiccup, he sounded like one too.

Loved the actual signal - and loved that Jamie gave it right back to Roy as a form of thanks. :)
  • I really hope they don't dwell on the anxiety attack storyline.  I think people love this show because it's so wholesome and uplifting, it's the perfect show for those of us who want to escape reality and all of the bad things going on in the world...I don't think that we need people's struggles with mental health issues injected into the show.

And while I'm being a negative Ned, I don't want to take the shine off Brett Goldstein's apple but he's playing a character named "Roy Kent" who is an analog of a (now retired) real-life player named "Roy Keane" and he's essentially acting like Keane does in real life.

Given the way the show handles things I think the arc of the anxiety storyline will be to show Ted ultimately responding in a healthy way, showing someone going from being standoffish to counseling for themselves, but actually getting something out of it.  Kind of like how they handled the divorce story line in season 1.  I can appreciate that some people may want to avoid potentially fraught topics like that entirely, but I think the show is largely trying to be both funny/entertaining and model healthy attitudes toward how we should treat each other and ourselves.  The mental health stuff isn't just an injection of tension, but to actually model something for the audience too.

I suspect that you're probably right and I trust that they will handle it well, but on the flip side it will probably end up being a very superficial handling.  Sort of like he needed help, he got help and he's back to his old self now, but that's (sadly) not really typical of how that goes in real life.  I'm not dead against it or anything (and maybe tackling the issue with what's going on in the world will lessen the stigma and encourage people who need help but have resisted getting it), but I think it's a difficult topic to properly address in a sitcom.

Thankfully, I don't have mental health issues but with covid, politics, all the other stuff in the news it's sometimes hard for me to keep a positive attitude and outlook.  Ted Lasso has been a battery for my optimism and selfishly I guess, I don't want that stepped on.  I need a goofy eternally optimistic wholesome influence in my life (so I can do my best to be that for my friends and family in real life ha!).

  • "Ugly cry for hours.  Ted Lasso, only on Apple TV+" ;-)

As @mharmless said, I hope they cover Ted's issues to the same depth they do other issues on the show.  They don't have to show Ted perfectly mentally healthy for all time as much as able to overcome his current issue and keep going for now.

I went back and watched Nate's taking charge on the field and scrolling through SM afterwards; first time I've rewatched any of the show.  Wonder [kid] if that's Nate's main arc done for the season.

Nate really got into his own head with this wonder kid/big moment thing. He needs a reality check and needs to realize how big of an ass he really has been.

Storywise I guess the club can't afford to do so but I wanted to see a match where the other coaches step back and let Nate run it entirely on his own, presumably to defeat.

I don't want a repeat of Jamie's story with Nate going somewhere else and running out of options before coming back.

At this point in the season I'm most interested in how they handle Sam/Rebecca.  If we throw out the horrible scenario of Sam saying "You're old and I really want kids" and presumably Sam does not replace Rebecca's existing booty call, do they end up as friends (seems boring)?

Where can I find me a Roy Kent???

Loved how they pulled the Roy/Keeley storyline for this ep straight from the Sex & The City ep she was watching, including the bathtub scene.  I thought for sure she was going to convince him to get in, the way Carrie convinced Aidan to get in when he drew her bath.

I about spit my drink out when Rebecca said "Oh my God! I'm a pee-dophile!"

Mixed bag of emotions for me this week. I love Sam, I love Rebecca, but I don’t love Sam and Rebecca. She’s his boss and it’s creepy. I was really hoping they wouldn’t go there.

Love Dr Sharon, and I’m glad Ted finally opened up to her (a bit).

Hands up who else cried when Roy hugged Jamie? I’ll be looking for that gif in the morning once the Tumblrinas get going.

I think once they decided on a Sam/Rebecca romance, they had to consummate it, otherwise Rebecca might be viewed as racist.  I don't think the relationship will last long.

Sam might be set up for bad things to happen, given the oil company/home government is very angry at him.

Cheers already tried the Sam/Rebecca thing. Wasn’t feeling that either. Here’s a thought. Let’s have a strong, independent woman NOT worry about finding a man for once. Being alone does not mean being lonely.

Absolutely still loving the show. Just hope this bit is short-lived.

Omg that moment tore me up.  And *of course* it had to be Roy.  I love where these two are now compared to where they started, both separately and together.

The episode title really was so appropriate - the obvious reference is the team they played, but it’s really about *this* team and the idea of what it means to be a man, to stand up for yourself, to ‘man up’.  There are many layered definitions of what it means to be a man, & several are explored here in the actions of these guys - Roy consistently stepping up to guide Phoebe in the right direction, Sam opening his heart to go for what he wants, Jamie refusing to allow his monster of a father to treat him and his teammates horribly, Ted facing the sadness he’s kept bottled up for so many years & working through it via therapy.  This team is the *real* ‘Man City’.

This show has become so much more than I thought it would be in the first ep of season 1.  I’m loving it more and more.

Loved the insight, didn’t even catch the man city reference. Arguably the Best episode of the series.

  • Next week’s episode is titled Beard after Hours, which I never thought the show devote  an episode to this character. My instinct says it will be a trainspotting-ish drug induced haze, though I hope Im wrong as that would be off brand for the show.

He did take off on his own to wander around London & work through the game loss, so maybe it’ll be all about his adventures during that walk.  I suspect it will lead him to some revelations about life etc and hopefully about his relationship with Jane.  I don’t see them staying together.

Apparently Apple wanted a bit longer of a season, so there were two episodes filmed & slotted into the series after the crew had already wrapped filming/production - the Christmas episode was one, and I have a feeling this Beard ep might be the other.

  • I love how the show still manages to surprise me. It’s a show that traffics in decency and warmth, may even be hokey at times but never comes off as trite or annoying. That being said, the show never completely leans into that, and still finds ways to illustrate the characters in fun ways. Issac’s haircut for Sam is a perfect example of the team coalescing and Issac was just entertaining as hell.

  • SPOILERS for some other Apple TV+ shows

"Hundreds of iPhones Are in ‘Ted Lasso.’ They’re More Strategic Than You Think."

"We watched 40+ hours of the streaming service to analyze Apple's product placement strategy Watch an Apple TV+ show and you’re likely to notice a lot of iPhones, iPads and other Apple products. We analyzed 74 episodes of the streaming service’s top shows, including “Ted Lasso,” and “The Morning Show,” to better understand the strategy behind all that product placement."

I switched off halfway through. I realised I have no interest in more than a couple of minutes of Coach Beard an episode.

I was surprised the only recreational chemical was alcohol.  Thought for sure there would be psychedelic elements.

Maybe scan near the end for the dance scene.
