Apparently Apple wanted a bit longer of a season, so there were two episodes filmed & slotted into the series after the crew had already wrapped filming/production - the Christmas episode was one, and I have a feeling this Beard ep might be the other.
    good call @Michelle!

as far as the episode goes. what a trip (pun intended)! it's def gonna be a hate it or love it episode. i honestly kept waiting for the bad trip to be over sooner than later. nope.
I've read a few reviews and it's 100% love it or hate it, even on IMDB people are either rating it 10/10 or 1/10 - very few in between.

Put me down as one of the 1/10's.

I realize this was a one-off filler episode and I don't want to judge the whole season by it, but there's a niggling feeling that the producers of the show don't really understand what made season 1 a hit.
  • Was that supposed to be Jane in the club? The whole announcers talking to beard thing was cringey hack.

Yes, I think that was meant to be her.

It wasn't written as one of the original episodes that were submitted for season 2.  Apple wanted a couple more episodes after the fact to make a little bit longer of a season, so that's why we got the Christmas ep and this ep.  It's just a one-off that wasn't really meant to tie into storyline much at all.

Well that was…interesting but not in a good way. The three fans were funny and the scene in the stadium was sweet. But the rest? The only reason I kept watching was because @lengmo hinted at a dance scene. FYI I danced along.

I'm a pretty big guy, not really a tough guy though but I have gotten into a tussle or two.  My last one (which was probably 15+ years ago!) was my best one.

I used to work midnights at a grocery store that was really close to where I live so I'd walk to work just a few minutes before midnight in what is usually a pretty quiet suburb, especially around that hour on a Tuesday night or whatever.

I was walking to work and a car went speeding by and someone in the car yelled out the f-bomb (derogatory word for a gay person) at me and I responded by showing them my middle finger.  The car stopped about 20 feet ahead of me and a guy jumped out of one of the back seats and yelled in a drunken slurred voice "You're fucking dead!" and just charged at me.  I could tell that there were a few guys in the car and I was on my own so I really thought I was in trouble.  Anyway, this guy sprints like 20 feet to come at me, which gave me time to really steady myself - I thought he was going to tackle me so I was preparing to side-step him.  When he got close he raised his fist up like he was going to punch me and not tackle me which give me a lot of time to react.  I used my left arm to push him towards my left (his momentum did most of the work!) and as he was going past me I used my right arm to throw a punch that landed square on his jaw. The guy's knees buckled and he went right to the ground, knocked out cold.

When I looked back towards the car, the driver and another guy had gotten out of the car.  The driver looked calm but the other guy was clearly shit-faced drunk and shouting at me, telling me he was going to kill me but also didn't come at me at all.  I got the sense that the driver was probably the only sober one and he looked annoyed with his friends, so I said to him "I think you should take care of your buddy" pointing to the guy on the ground beside me.  The driver told the drunk guy to get back into the car, and he started walking towards me.  I asked "Are we good?" and he said "Yeah, we're good"  So I walked in a wide arc around the guy and his car (I was worried that the drunk guy might jump out of the car and come at me).

I got about 30 feet in front of the car, which is where the street I was walking on intersects with the main road in the town, like a T junction.  When I got there, a guy named Paul from my work who I didn't really know that well happened to be riding his bike down the main road and he rode over to me.  He saw the car in the middle of the road and the guy still laying down in the street while the driver was trying to revive him and asked me what was going on.  I told Paul what happened and he didn't believe me, I kept telling him it was true but he just kept laughing and saying "no way, you're full of shit" etc I was also prodding Paul to keep moving with me (he was still on his bike, but has his feet on the ground and wasn't moving) and then Paul stupidly yelled out "Hey, did this guy just knock out your buddy?".  The response to that was the angry drunk guy getting out of the car and come charging towards us.  Paul panicked, got tangled up in his bike and fell to the ground and scrambled to get back up.  I did the exact same thing that I did to the first guy, as he came at me I deflected him away from me with my left arm, punched him with my right, and knocked him out too.  The look on Paul's face was priceless.

I yelled back to the driver "You've got another one down over here" and he yelled back "oh for fuck's sake" - clearly more angry at his friends than me.

Paul and I made our way to work, and of course the story of what just happened spread pretty quickly.  For about a month everyone at work called me the "one-punch wonder".  I haven't seen that guy Paul in ages, but whenever I do run into him he still calls me the "one-punch wonder".  When people ask why he calls me that and I have to tell the story, I usually downplay how sloppy and drunk the two guys I knocked out were ha!

I picked up on the fact that it was an homage of sorts to After Hours, but didn't see the connection to The Odyssey until now.
  • While it would have been a little hack, a montage of Beard and tje superfans consuming copious amounts of booze would have felt appropriate. Just something where the actors could have had some indulgent fun would have given this episode some flare.

  • @CretanBull amazing story man. That's awesome and glad things worked out the way they did for you.

My only fight, if you even call it that, is pretty lame. Basically got jumped by 3 kids while trick or treating when I was with another friend back in middle school. I wore glasses at the time and didn't even know what was happening and a fist came at my face, pushed my glasses into my eyebrow and cut me open enough to get a 4 or 5 stitches. They ran off immediately.

I'm about the least imposing person and definitely a lover and not a fighter.

If the guys weren't so drunk they could barely walk, I would have been in serious trouble.  I've been 6'1 and around/over 200lbs since high school and used to be a long-haired metal guy so I avoided a lot of fights just by being tall/big and looking kind of scary (to some anyway!).

I'm not reading the thread yet because we still have a few episodes to go, but I just started it last week and I'm so glad that I did. I was going to take a pass because the build up was so huge that I didn't think it was possible that I wouldn't be completely disappointed, but holy shit. I'm fucking in love with this show. Talk about heart and great characters, and wonderful, super clever writing. It seems that Lawrence has given us his Parks and Rec and it's extremely formidable.

Anyhoo. I'm so happy I got a couple of pushes to give it a shot. Thanks Dan Feinberg and my wife's physical therapist.

  • Feels like the show is now on the upswing for a positive season ending.

Glad they handled the Rebecca/Sam parting gently.

Obscure reference: Rupert completely giving up the club to Rebecca after having a child reminds me of the plot of one of the characters in First Among Equals https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090431/?ref_=nm_flmg_wr_5

Could be; Nathan’s ego issue seems unresolved; maybe Rupert is telling him a more successful club has expressed interest.  Or, Rupert gave him stunningly bad career advice which stroked his ego and Nathan will do something awful because of it.

With Roy back, has Nathan arced out and it’s time for him to exit the show?

This season has disappointed me more often than not. The writers have made decisions that are just - ugh, why? Sam and Rebecca. How has NO ONE had a problem with this? Not Keeley, not Ted, not Sassy, not even Nora. I hate it so much.

Why do they have to keep manufacturing conflict for Roy and Keeley? The whole point of their arc last season was that they were two mature adults forming a mature relationship, and they had mutual respect for each other, but this season it’s become a soap story line. Ooh, this other guy is in love with me. Ooh, this teacher and I hung out and there was a connection. No. Just let them have a happy relationship and give them other stories.

On the other hand, as much as I want to punch Nate, the writing and portrayal of his character has been fantastic. He’s so recognisable as one of those guys who you sort of feel bad for because they’ve had a rough time, but they have such a mean streak and a bitter victim mentality that it makes them unlikeable and slightly repellant, and they think everyone is out to get them, which makes them untrustworthy themselves. I don’t know if it was meant to be an intentional tiny dig on Will’s part, but I did laugh when he said “I got the suit Ted bought you cleaned” instead of “I got your suit cleaned”.

I love Sam’s connection to his family and his home I wish they’d explored that more than his terrible relationship. There could have been a really interesting fallout story after they dropped the sponsor because of him, but it just went nowhere - they must have lost millions! But it was just whatever, we have this app now.

Ted and Dr Sharon have been great all season. The scene where he read the letter was beautiful - his face being all pissy and neener neener at first, then gradually becoming serious, then tears springing to his eyes as he continued reading. Those are the Ted Lasso moments I am here for.

    Hello, Ted. It’s Trent Crimm

    The Independent

was hilarious. But not nearly enough Trent Crimm, The Independent this year.

it’s not too soon. I am disgusted by him. Which I am guessing is a sign of good writing.

I do agree with @dee about Keely and Roy. Why are they messing with that? It’s a great relationship and brings both warmth and humour to the story. I do hope this is back on track by the end of the finale.
  • Sam and Rebecca - I didn't see a problem with it as the relationship didn't seem likely to work out.  Even if it did, they're two well-off, consenting adults.  Rebecca was earlier shown with a younger man and no one freaked out about that.  In the racism-free Ted Lasso universe, Sam could easily go play for another team if there were questions about the power dynamic.

Roy and Keeley - Maybe because it's the first relationship for both of them where both sides are committed that they are struggling?  Perhaps more importantly, there's a dearth of female characters on the show so Keeley has to shoulder a large share of the romantic drama/confusion/etc.

Will - My problem with the gag is how did Will know Ted bought Nate the suit?  After Nate's behavior towards Will, I assume the dig was 100% intentional.

Sponsorship - I think we're supposed to believe Keeley's marketing acumen saved the day by getting them a great sponsorship deal.

The show seems to be struggling to find the right tone, so reports it will only last three seasons are perhaps good news.

@lengmo Rebecca is Sam’s boss, and as he’s under contract, she controls his career. I think @A_Ron_Hubbard summed up really well all the issues with that in the latest (or maybe the one before that?) Off The Clock.

As for the suit, I feel like it’s been mentioned T least once before publicly that Ted bought him the suit? I know it’s common knowledge, but I can’t remember why.

If we weren't dealing with reformed Rebecca and wonderful Sam, I would agree it could become a problem.
