I had some fun with a scammer a few days ago. I got a call that came up on my phone as being from Hudson Quebec, which is a very small town (maybe 4-5 thousand at the most) about an hour or so way from Montreal. I grew up in Montreal and when I was a kid went to Hudson fairly often because my dad's aunt & uncle and two cousins lived there. My dad's aunt and uncle passed away a long time ago and his cousins no longer lived there either, but when I saw Hudson come up in my call display I kinda figured it had something to do with that part of the family. Nope, it was a scammer (Indian or Pakistani, an accent similar to that anyway) pretending to be the Canada Border Services Agency informing me that someone rented a car in my name and driven it to Detroit where it was seized outside of a crack house. Apparently, 22 pounds of cocaine was in the trunk of the car. Lucky for me, they'd already determined that I wasn't the driver but they were calling to tell me that I was the victim of identity theft. What I needed to do was take all of my money out of my bank account, go to a Post Office and buy a money order for the full amount and send it to a Canada Border Services Agency bank - conveniently located in Thailand (they assured me that the Canadian Government does all of its banking in Thailand because it's famous for its security, ha!) - that way it would be safe until they could restore my true identity.
I spent about an hour on the phone with them haha!
This came up today as a Facebook memory, it still makes me giggle. The Conservative Party here was flooding people's cell phones with text asking people to support them. Sarah caught me at a bad time and I wasn't as polite as I should have been. Sorry Sarah!
