Has Bald move given up on prestige tv?

Has bald move completely given up on prestige tv?

No succession, no Yellowstone, no Yellowjackets, no Station Eleven, no Mayor of Kingstown, no Squid game,
…. And that’s just a few of the amazing shows the past few months.  There hasn’t been a tv show in that feed since Fargo in 2020.

Yet we get book podcasts, the expanse, ancient movie reviews, and the Walking Dead?  Why?  I get you can’t cover everything but it seems like you’ve thrown in the towel.

 Did I miss an announcement?.

Thanks for the memories!

Well... they did watch and cover Station 11.  That coverage is in their Off The Clock podcast (available to club members).  They've been vocal about not covering Succession and why, even though there are many of us here who love it.  It's just not their kind of show (the premise).  And it wouldn't make for a good podcast if they're just hate watching/hate covering or have a lot of disappointing things to say.

One thing we've learned is that it is virtually impossible for two guys to cover *all* of tv or at least all of what people think of as worthy of coverage, especially if they're all released at about the same time.  There's just simply not enough hours in the day.  But also, for the guys to cover something, there has to be a significant amount of interest to them.

Trust me, I get it.  I'd love Bald Move to cover Succession.  It's just not going to happen though.  That said, there are plenty of other worthy podcasts on the show.  They're not Bald Move, but they're fantastic runners up - The Ringer, The Watch, and Post Show Recaps.

I can definitely see Sdub’s point. I wish they would’ve covered station 11 as it’s on podcast. Would love to hear them discuss it by episode. And many of those other ones mentioned as well. Perhaps they could spend more time on current shows and less on old movies minus the ones that are commissioned. But it’s their show.

I just don’t get not picking up a single new show in over 3 years. Maybe the expanse, but that’s hardly a new show. Think of all the amazing things that have come out. I simply have to look elsewhere for discussion of it, and it bums me out.

Also to be clear I understand it’s their shows and their network… they’ve given me more than my fair share of entertainment and changed how I watch television. I felt like I didn’t want to leave after 10 years without sharing my thoughts, honest feedback is important.

  • I don't think it's been quite that long. Weren't The New Pope and Watchmen both covered in Prestige?

I think a lot of it is financial. They don't usually risk Day 1 on something that doesn't seem like it'll be a sure thing, and most shows based on previous IP, shows that likely guarantee listeners, they tend to be in Pulp.

They certainly lament the lack of Prestige in the Lunches and OTC. They want to cover it, but haven't seen the shows that make it worthwhile. On the bright side, Jim and Alexis will certainly cover the final season of Better Call Saul when it returns. And if Yellowjackets proves to be popular enough, maybe they'll take it on in season two.

Even if they choose to pick up Squid Game, though, I'd imagine that would be in the Pulp feed.

That bugs me a little. I love the guys, respect their decisions, and will always be a supporter. That being said, they didn't even give Succession a shot. Anytime I hear them mention a lack of prestige, I just chuckle and think "Oh you know, besides the fact that we are well into one of the best shows HBO has ever done."

There's lots of fantastic stuff out there, so it is a bit confounding that they haven't thrown more at the wall to see what sticks. If they are waiting for the next GoT. That is doubtful to happen in our lifetime. Audiences are too fragmented and specific in their interests. But there is good stuff if you keep your ear to the ground.

I am constantly watching trailers for stuff I'm interested in that is coming my way. Hell, on Discord there is a whole thread for trailers and upcoming shows. I saw trailers for Station 11 a few months back and added it to my list of things to watch when the time came. Add me to the list of not quite getting the decision to not try new stuff that has good word of mouth...or if nothing else just looks interesting.

I mean, as much as I love the guys and will defend them all day every day, I am part of the large number of us who are disappointed that they didn't/don't cover Succession.  I know I talked about this briefly earlier and that there are great Succession pods out there.  But to just write it off as 'rich assholes being rich assholes' or 'rich people problems' based on assumption, rather than actually give it a chance, seemed a little hand-wavey when those of us who watch it know that it is SO much more involved and intense, and dives deep into the characters' psyches.  I think Jim actually did watch a portion of season 1 (or all of it?) and wasn't suuuuper thrilled but I think they also mentioned not being in the right mindframe to watch heavy stuff (amidst covid and the state of the world etc etc etc).  Maybe if it's approached with an open mind rather than crossed arms and squinty eyes, pre-judging it?  Because I think as deep as the show has gotten, there are a LOT of good conversations to be had.

Then again, I know it's their choice and I will still support them no matter what.  But this is the one tiny thing that just negs at me like "well... okay.  "

The problem with Succession is that it’s the Keto of television - people who are into it are REALLY into it, and can’t seem to grasp why anyone else would not be into it.

I watched - I think 4 episodes? Maybe 5? - so probably gave it about as much of a chance as Jim did, and to me it’s just rich arseholes with rich arsehole problems, a topic I have no interest in. So I get why they are not into it. And I’m not a ride or die agree-with-BM-er - I’m on record as THAT person who hated The Leftovers.

I made it halfway through S2 & got distracted & haven't been back to it yet. It's a quality show, but I don't love it. I'd also prefer J&A not cover it, since Jim was 'meh' about it & the premise is not A.Ron's cup of tea. Why have them cover a show they're unlikely to be passionate about? I'd much rather all of the nagging be towards getting A.Ron to watch Better Call Saul S5 before the final season airs. J&A should see out the finale of the BrBa universe together (along with Alexa of course), since it was such a big part of the launch of BM.

  • If you want loving coverage of Succession by two longtime guy friends, I highly doubt you'll find better than The Watch podcast.

In fact, I wonder if J&A have taken a hard look at The Watch.  Not for covering Succession, but for being an ad-supported podcast where the hosts talk about whatever they're watching that week.  Some shows such as Succession get in-depth coverage and others just cursory discussion.

(WRT Succession, it's clear from listening to The Watch that it has very clever, funny writing and is very popular.  Like some folks here, I don't care to watch a show about the mostly incompetent rich being mean to each other.  Also, loved the world building in The Leftovers s1 but the other seasons didn't work for me.  If everyone liked the same things, shows would be a lot less diverse.)

I can get over them skipping succession.  But they skip over every new scripted drama that isn’t sci-fi or fantasy. There are a record number of new shows every year now. They’re not all going to be water cooler shows like BrBa or GoT. But you still need to pick a few a year and cover them if you want to stay engaged with your audience.

The Prestige V Pulp thing might not be working out so great. It’s only been going on for like 2 years now?  But it’s like the bar for Prestige is Leftovers, and if you think Leftovers is the best show ever, then I honestly don’t know what to tell ya. It’s been A LOT w/ Expanse & Foundation but I’m holding out for Hot D. But you can’t force ‘em of course, and you don’t want to stamp your feet & pound your thighs per se, demanding your show to be watched cause then you’ll get a sloppy watch / background watching a spouse’s show/ ‘hate watching’, and instead of committing 100%, you’re leaned back, arms crossed, squint-eyed and smirking ready to point at the tv and roll on the ground laughing instead of picking up all the details of the show.

Mare of Easttown was my bummer. Apparently Reddit only had 14k people (same as Foundation.) Feel like Yellowjackets was a miss too (40k on Reddit). And if you say “well is Yellowjackets prestige really?” then again, is Prestige V Pulp really working? It’s a business though. Hard to see in the future and place your bets.

Chris & Andy are so great!  I love their pods.  I started listening to them because they were covering Succession, but stuck around because they have such great chemistry together as friends & pod partners.  Their camaraderie is just so engaging & entertaining. They're easily in my top 3 '2-guy' podcasts (top being Aron & Jim of course, second being Kevin & Jon from the Sex and the Cidiots & Bridgerton Bros podcasts, third being Chris Ryan & Andy Greenwald).

I used to not like Chris and Andy back when they did GoT but since then I’ve come to appreciate them much more. They really did Station Eleven the justice it deserved. (Props to @wasi !)

I know @A_Ron_Hubbard liked Downton Abbey so I have to call attention to the Gilden age. It also stars Carrie Coon. Watched the first episode and I very much like it. As for Chris and Andy those guys are great. If I see they are covering a show I haven’t watched I generally give it a try so I can listen to their review. And I have to say that since Joanna Robinson moved over to the ringer her audio is so much better that listening is a bit more pleasurable.

Bringing back The Walking Dead was a ludicrous decision, but I put that 100% on the community and not Jim and Aron. The people who vocally advocated for that should be shame-walked through the streets of Kings Landing and hit in the face with balls of shit.

That said, Aron will routinely get a brain worm in his head about what he thinks a show or a movie is and immediately forms an opinion about it regardless of whether or not it’s accurate, and I think sometimes it ends up poisoning Jim’s interest in seeing it or covering it.

Succession is the easy example here, but he did it with a movie called Sicario too. He constructed this whole story in his head about the “American war on drugs” and how politically toxic it was and it’s literally just an action movie about a hitman taking revenge for his family getting killed. It was so bizarre.

Not to mention him incomprehensibly bailing on one of the greatest shows on TV during the height of its run with Better Call Saul!

I really don’t know what to think about their coverage anymore. I’m not going to stop supporting them or anything, but it seems like they’re ignoring so much great shit.

Never covering Ozark also seems like a wild decision. And I’ll never forget when everyone was asking the guys to watch Mare of Easttown during the time the internet was absolutely red-hot for that show and we were in the middle of a pandemic and Aron literally spent 12 seconds on an OTC one time going “I watched Mare of Easttown. It was fine.”

They haven’t been interested in anything other than The Expanse since GOT ended and yet we’ve had some incredible television during that time.

I still love the guys but sadly I’ll be cancelling my sub at renewal unfortunately. Am not into any super hero stuff so counts me out for a lot of the pods these days and seeing what the peeps over at The Ringer are covering with their prestige TV is great. Kudos tho to Jim & Aron for watching and reviewing what they are passionate about.

The whole succession thing was annoying to me as hearing Aron lamenting on a podcast (as season 3 was airing)  that there was nothing really happening at the moment re prestige TV... as one of the best prestige shows on TV was on. To dismiss it without even checking it out (I assume?) is a bit of an indictment IMO.

Hoping the new GoT series is good and will be interesting to see the reactions and framing of the series if it isn’t. I watched all of Foundation - and really wanted to like it but thought was average at best and felt (perhaps an unfair take) that J&A were so all in they had to love it.

Kinda considering doing the same. I’m on the old Club model anyway which will eventually become obsolete, and there’s too many other podcasts out there that are covering the great shit that we’re getting on TV right now.

  • It's definitely a bummer the guys aren't covering the best shows on TV anymore.  Remember the Mad Men, Breaking Bad, GoT, Leftovers and Fargo days?  I couldn't get enough of the pod back then.

But at the same time, I wouldn't want them to cover shows they don't enjoy or have anything to say about.  I'm getting that sense now with The Book of Boba Fett, which I'm having a lot of fun with, but they seem not really into at all.  I'd hate listening to them rail on something like Succession, or Yellowjackets, or Euphoria, for an hour without their typical witty and insightful commentary.  So maybe we should just let sleeping dogs lie and get our fix elsewhere (The Ringer is basically the go-to place for TV coverage right now) until something galvanizes them again.

I'm guessing House of the Dragon, at least season one, will be eventful.

I do generally give the guys the benefit of the doubt on what they cover, but they really did miss out on a lot of the “water cooler” shows that most of the online tv community were talking about this year. I agree The Ringer has stepped up its game, but that is a bit of an unfair comparison due to the huge difference in resources.

If I had one piece of advice, it would be to pay closer attention to the HBO prestige pipeline, and give more shows a chance, even if they are a first season, and especially if they have a solid pedigree. There are of course other good networks, but HBO consistently produces at least a few prestige shows a year that garner a lot of conversation.

If I had a second piece of advice, it would be for ARon to catch up on Better Call Saul and jump on the coverage for the final season! This is in no way a criticism of Alexis, and I’d love the three of them to cover it …. but c’mon, the Bald Move prestige empire was built on Breaking Bad, and your not gonna give the white glove treatment to the final season of the Villigang’s critically acclaimed follow up?!?

I really do get the not covering something you don’t like, but honestly I felt like his reasons for quitting were a little weak.  I’m fine with listening to a podcast with objective criticisms, especially if the other host has a different perspective! The Watch guys also get fed up with shows they cover - for example they were also down on the Americans mid-run. But they kept checking in with it and when the final season nailed the landing, I was glad to have their perspective on it! And they had the same relationship with BCS as well.

Succession is obviously a big miss, but post-pandemic TV has been hard to follow in general.  I haven't seen anything about Station Eleven until I hit the forums.  And while we're on HBO, they aired 6 episodes of The Nevers and disappeared.  There's still 6 episodes in the can, but it's like nothing ever happened.  They air the pilot of Peacemaker, but everything afterwards has to be streamed.  It's wild out there.

Plus, we shouldn't forget that 2019 was a freakishly huge year with True Detective, Stranger Things, Chernobyl, Watchmen, Game of Thrones and Mr. Robot.  2020 and 2021 were always going to be down years.

The Nevers is a unique situation because a bunch of the Joss Whedon stuff came out right around when it premiered.

Peacemaker is an HBO Max show, not HBO, as is Station Eleven. Yea, it’s dumb and just confuses customers and dilutes the brand, but that’s the reason.

  • Companies such as HBO have to drive their existing audiences to streaming so we’ll see awkward “go online to watch“ efforts until everyone gets the message.

I definitely don’t agree that the quality is down. It’s at an all time high with an all time high in number of scripted dramas.  The only reason 2020 was down was Covid. It doesn’t make it easier to find what to cover, but it’s not a viable business decision to decide cover nothing.

I’m 3/4 through the first episode of Yellowjackets and so far, I’m into it.  I’m definitely picking up the elements of Lost that they were influenced by, and I love the 90s era we open on (great soundtrack!).  Sounds like maybe Aron’s into checking this out - maybe Jim too?  Hopefully they like it.

  • Yellowjackets was fun and made for a nice doubleheader with the Dexter miniseries.  I'm a little nostalgic for Cecily and A.Ron coverage because they would have been great on it.  However, that show turns into straight pulp.  The fact that Yellowjackets is being mentioned in a prestige thread is kind of indicative of the point I made -- things have been down.  There may be tons of "stuff" being scripted, but I can't really blame the guys for the lack of prestige coverage.  The big water cooler dramas just aren't out there at the moment.
