Has Bald move given up on prestige tv?
Has bald move completely given up on prestige tv?
No succession, no Yellowstone, no Yellowjackets, no Station Eleven, no Mayor of Kingstown, no Squid game,
…. And that’s just a few of the amazing shows the past few months. There hasn’t been a tv show in that feed since Fargo in 2020.
Yet we get book podcasts, the expanse, ancient movie reviews, and the Walking Dead? Why? I get you can’t cover everything but it seems like you’ve thrown in the towel.
Did I miss an announcement?.
Did I miss an announcement?.
Thanks for the memories!

That bugs me a little. I love the guys, respect their decisions, and will always be a supporter. That being said, they didn't even give Succession a shot. Anytime I hear them mention a lack of prestige, I just chuckle and think "Oh you know, besides the fact that we are well into one of the best shows HBO has ever done."
I am constantly watching trailers for stuff I'm interested in that is coming my way. Hell, on Discord there is a whole thread for trailers and upcoming shows. I saw trailers for Station 11 a few months back and added it to my list of things to watch when the time came. Add me to the list of not quite getting the decision to not try new stuff that has good word of mouth...or if nothing else just looks interesting.
Mare of Easttown was my bummer. Apparently Reddit only had 14k people (same as Foundation.) Feel like Yellowjackets was a miss too (40k on Reddit). And if you say “well is Yellowjackets prestige really?” then again, is Prestige V Pulp really working? It’s a business though. Hard to see in the future and place your bets.
Chris & Andy are so great! I love their pods. I started listening to them because they were covering Succession, but stuck around because they have such great chemistry together as friends & pod partners. Their camaraderie is just so engaging & entertaining. They're easily in my top 3 '2-guy' podcasts (top being Aron & Jim of course, second being Kevin & Jon from the Sex and the Cidiots & Bridgerton Bros podcasts, third being Chris Ryan & Andy Greenwald).
Succession is the easy example here, but he did it with a movie called Sicario too. He constructed this whole story in his head about the “American war on drugs” and how politically toxic it was and it’s literally just an action movie about a hitman taking revenge for his family getting killed. It was so bizarre.
The whole succession thing was annoying to me as hearing Aron lamenting on a podcast (as season 3 was airing) that there was nothing really happening at the moment re prestige TV... as one of the best prestige shows on TV was on. To dismiss it without even checking it out (I assume?) is a bit of an indictment IMO.
If I had one piece of advice, it would be to pay closer attention to the HBO prestige pipeline, and give more shows a chance, even if they are a first season, and especially if they have a solid pedigree. There are of course other good networks, but HBO consistently produces at least a few prestige shows a year that garner a lot of conversation.
I really do get the not covering something you don’t like, but honestly I felt like his reasons for quitting were a little weak. I’m fine with listening to a podcast with objective criticisms, especially if the other host has a different perspective! The Watch guys also get fed up with shows they cover - for example they were also down on the Americans mid-run. But they kept checking in with it and when the final season nailed the landing, I was glad to have their perspective on it! And they had the same relationship with BCS as well.
I definitely don’t agree that the quality is down. It’s at an all time high with an all time high in number of scripted dramas. The only reason 2020 was down was Covid. It doesn’t make it easier to find what to cover, but it’s not a viable business decision to decide cover nothing.
