@lengmo The final episode of Suspicion was so bad. I’m still sitting here a day later feeling annoyed about it. What a mess.
If you're a glutton for punishment, Elizabeth Henstridge is doing a watch-along/commentary for the show
Cardinal, s2-4: Entertaining but not great. I am glad I didn't discover the show was available during the winter because there's so much snow and ice it's impossible to not feel cold watching it. Season 4 is the last season (no more source material to adapt is the reason given). Gory crime scenes, lots of deaths, Heavy winter clothing, guns, ice, snow and more snow.
Finally got around to watching the Yellowjackets pilot. Lives up to the hype. It’s scratching the nostalgia itch for sure as well. Can’t wait to watch the rest.
Pachinko So good. Beautifully shot. Performances top notch. Hoping BM gives it some love on OTC.
100% agree on this! AppleTV+ on fire!
edit: shout out CODA! i started a thread when it came out, but got no love. love that movie! gives me the feels everytime! esp as a dad seeing my little girl grow up
Finished the first season of Our Flag Means Death. Talk about a show that grew on me as the season wore on. I was enjoying it well enough, but those final two episodes brought the heartbreak and feels. I'll definitely be checking out the second season if it gets renewed.
And perhaps because I hate myself, I started I May Destroy You. Those episodes are mercilessly short, because it is a tough watch so far. And yet, they find ways to mine some dark humor out of it somehow.
Reacher - heard good things about this Amazon series so tried it. Despite being based on a book from 1997 it might be so stripped down, so elemental it will feel like different things to different people. To me it feels like a throwback to hardboiled fiction. Maybe it will remind others of action movies from decades past. In any event, I enjoyed it but it is a simple pleasure.
One of the co-stars is Malcolm Goodwin of iZombie fame. I hope he doesn't get typecast as "uptight detective".
@Chinaski@cdrive since you’re both foodies like me, you’ll probably appreciate this - David Chang (yes, that David Chang) is co-hosting a podcast on Pachinko with artist David Choe. Both are Korean and are bringing some good insight to the storyline. It’s on The Prestige TV Podcast, part of The Ringer network.

Severance - I don't get the hype. OK premise, stylish but boring execution. Maybe this appeals to people who didn't grow up seeing reruns/TV showings of 60's TV/movies which were industrial-grade weird, such as The Prisoner.
Slow Horses - Spare-no-expense*, faithful adaptation of the novel of the same name. The trailer made me think it would be a watered-down version but it's quite good.
* Theme song written for show sung by Mick Jagger, for ex.

didn't grow up watching reruns/TV showings of 60's TV/movies which were industrial-grade weird, such as The Prisoner. so maybe that's why i dug it. even if i had, i think i'd still like it cause it's right up my alley (Eternal Sunshine, Her, Black Mirror). will say i thought the finale was a bit sloppy, but i still enjoyed, looking forward to S2.
Russian Doll (season 1) - Watched because it had been recommended and season two comes out Wednesday. Seemed kind of odd to have the lead acting like a standup comedian. Definitely prefer Palm Springs over this but Russian Doll did have some minor charms.
The Knick is on HBO Max so I decided to check it out. Pretty good period piece, set in that early 20th century era that some of the best shows of prestige TV have taken place. Plus, there might be a revival, so there could be more down the road, but as it is, it's a fascinating look at the transition from centuries of more primitive medicine to something resembling modern techniques. And the acting is great thus far.
From season 1 - This show (yes, just called "From") has a great first episode and strong character arcs throughout the season. There is some excellent world building. If you want weird horror, give it a try.
I do have a huge issue with the show: they made the delivery of electricity one of the mysteries and that was IMO a step too far into silliness. Just have makeshift windmills on top of telephone/power poles and handwave that's how the residents get their power. Also a minor nit but no one seems to be looking at the trees, soil, etc and trying to figure out where they might be by that.
Watching the second season of Made For Love, I like it so far. I barely heard anyone talk about the first season so not sure what the consensus was but it's a fun show and I love the direction they're going in S2.
Russian Doll season 2 - I found this much better than season 1 but still found the main protagonist a weird choice.
The Wire - Hadn't seen it before, but We Own This City got me to try it. Well worth watching. HBO spent some money converting it to 16:9 and upscaling(?) the original footage. It's compelling to watch 5 seasons, each with a somewhat different focus in the same city, and some new, some old cast each time. OTOH, it didn't ruin other police shows for me because it wasn't *that* amazing.

I really enjoyed the first season of Made for Love. The second is leaving me a bit more cold. It seems slightly less focused and more all over the place. Maybe it will all tie up in the last two episodes, but the central conceit seems to have gotten murkier (intentionally so)
I managed to make it through all 9 episodes of Couples Therapy season three on Showtime. What a fantastic, if not infuriating show. For those that haven't seen it, Couples Therapy is a reality show where a therapist is helping four different couples work through their issues. Each episode bite sized (usually 23-27 minutes), and I find it pretty enthralling. It lacks the typical dramatic beats that reality shows have. And it can be frustrating to see people play the victim or just sit on their hands and refuse to deal with problems. But it is worth a watch.

It is definitely more all over the place, but I'm enjoying the chaotic nature of it and confidence to do a bunch of weird shit as opposed to just focusing on the brain chip and him trying to win her back for a whole season again. I definitely did not see the whole AI plot coming. Seems like the kind of thing that's going to be hit or miss for most people, but they easily could have spent the whole season on the cancer and trying to balance getting him treatment with Gogle's manipulation and I think it'd be a less interesting show.

Totally. There is something to be said for just going for it. I do wonder about the strategy of releasing two episodes per week. I don't really care either way, but you'd imagine that HBO wouldn't follow that release plan through the whole season. An eight-episode season is done in a month. It kind of just seems dumped out there.

They're doing that with Hacks as well, which is an Emmy-winning show. Maybe it just means they are experimenting. Maybe it's a way to 'soak up' the time people have to watch each night and keep them from watching something on HBOmax and something on a competitor's streaming service.

I haven't minded the way they released them so far. These kinds of shows are more oriented towards being in the catalog for people to watch in a weekend when they want, it's not like it has to be part of a zeitgeist where they want people making podcasts about what will happen next like they want with Westworld.

No spoilers, but did you wrap up MfL and if so, what did you think? I admire the show just upsetting the apple cart with each finale and totally changing the landscape of what the next season would look like.

Yea we finished it last night. I liked it, especially that one really heartbreaking moment in the second to last episode. It felt like an earned climax with everything they've done this season, and what they did with it in the finale and how much it changed her mindset was fun but didn't feel like an out of nowhere shift. The theme of technology blurring the lines of our humanity and how people respond to that isn't exactly unexplored territory, but it's usually done in things that take themselves way more seriously and with less talking dolphins so I'm into this bonkers version of it. I hope they get to do another season.

Btw this show is doing well in the IMDb ratings. 9.3 for episode 4! https://m.imdb.com/title/tt8888462/episodes/?season=1
