Embarrassing music/fashion/whatever you loved as a teen

Spill. Me - as mentioned in another thread, I had a Spandau Ballet scrapbook. I had Bananarama-circa-1983 hair and Madonna-circa-1984 (or Christine Taylor in The Wedding Singer) fashion going on.

What about the rest of you?

George Michael posters on every wall... gold cross earring, MC Hammer parachute pants, Hypercolour tshirts (thank God I didn't sweat back then), rat tail (when I was 8... but I think they're still the norm in Rads :P), Vanilla Ice shaved eyebrows.. I was the coolest mofo in Year 8

I remember going to a nightclub in Adelaide about 8-10 years ago and the sign said 'No singlets, no hats, no rat tails, no entry'.

As a teen I was a punk rocker (does a blue Mohawk count as embarrassing?  Not in my book!), but when it comes to music - as confessed in the other thread - I had a glam-rock bump in my other wise great taste in music road.  I think I was about 12 or so and my older brother already had me listening to the New York Dolls and when I saw the first Poison album in the record store it looked like it might be something similar.  That lead to me through a dark era marked by Cinderella, Faster Pussycat, Love/Hate, Ratt and London Quireboys.

@wasi The rat tail gave you away. I'm not judging, I grew up in Corio - the boganiest of the bogan suburbs of Geelong.

Not to be all controversial :) but being a hard core GNR fan, I couldn't stand all those hair bands :P

I am so out of the loop - other than Poison and New York Dolls I have no idea who any of those are.

Adelaide is very wary of trends. We are just hitting goatees and Doc Martens now.

I loved Slash, but found Axel's voice so grating that I couldn't listen to them (especially beyond their 1st album)

I have no excuse...it started in a good place (New York Dolls) and ended up in a bad, bad place haha!

@CretanBull I can appreciate how Axl's screechy voice isn't for some! But the way he could hold a note was unbelievable... the tail end of Locomotive or Don't Cry.

Well, I definitely rocked some big ol Jnco and Kikwear jeans back in high school that are pretty embarrassing now. I flirted with the Gothic lifestyle but never really committed.

There are lots of bands though I look back on and just kind of cringe for listening to years ago. Limp Bizkit is way up there. Though I will say, I was only on board through the first three albums. Staind is another one. When their first big album came out, I was a million percent on board. I tried going back and listening to it recently and it's so depressing and just whiny BS. Ugghh.

Honorable mentions: Creeeeeeeeed. Jesus really? Godsmack, Kid Rock, Dope, Korn, Linkin Park (RIP), Taproot, hed PE, Adema, P.O.D...... just lots of horrible nu-metal bands.

Not when I was a teen, but this was my JAM when I was five. The first poster I ever had on my wall too haha!

Nu-Metal was one of the worst movements in music history.

  • I'll add on to the nu-metal embarrassment with Saliva (they were from my hometown of Memphis so you had to like them), disturbed (haven't listened to them since 10000 fists), and Mushroomhead (solitaire/unraveling was my favorite song). I also at the time that I was nine or ten, listened to Eminem like he was God (because to a white kid who came from a broken home, he kinda was) and Metallica (but my favorite album was Load, I'm more of a melodic guy even though now I realize that album is far inferior to the rest of their catalog). Fashion-wise, I also wore the Jncos jeans and basketball shoes like Iversons, I spiked my hair everyday, and I dressed as Eminem for Halloween one year. The late nineties/early two-thousands were a strange time for all of us.

I was super into the 80s trends as a teen. I had the big permed hair, which started out all crazy ala Madonna '84-'85 (although I didn't dress like her much, just the hair, the big earrings, tons of bangles/bracelets, and flats), but then became typical California 80s girl big perm highlighted with Sun-In or lemon juice. I wore a lot of Capri style jeans, leggings or footless tights, and pegged the jeans I did have that were longer length. I loved the loose-fitting belly shirts combined with a tank top underneath (usually a bright color that matched the shirt), baggy sweatshirts with the neck cut out (not necessarily off the shoulder - about midway to that though), and fun tshirts with a belt around the waist (always a longer length, no waist length) and the sleeves rolled way up. I used to loooove wearing my INXS "Listen Like Thieves" white concert tshirt, sleeves rolled (of course), black belt around my waist (loose, not tight), my pegged acid wash jeans, cute black flats, big big earrings, lots of bangles, big ass hair, frosted pink lipstick, eyes done... good to go!

Music-wise I was more into the modern rock/pop of that time... Duran Duran, INXS, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Madonna, Wham, etc.

Movies - just about everything fun that was out.  I still love Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, and Some Kind of Wonderful.  And I have a soft spot for The Lost Boys.

  • I am probably the oldest one here.  I loved "The Hustle" when I was 12.  Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony. I cringe just remembering it.

  • I was forced to get perms, but even those would settle to a mild frizz after a few weeks.

Mousse or gel and hairspray!  Aqua Net light purple can!  I couldn't live without either back then.  They definitely kept my permed curls  in shape, bouncy, and the rest in place.  I think me and most of the girls in my school singlehandedly contributed to the ozone problems.

  • I went full Mc Hammer in middle school. Hammer pants, flat top hair with lines in the side, and big ass glasses. Dear god that look is embarrassing.
