American Vandal

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this here yet.

The elevator pitch is: a Serial gets the Spinal Tap-like satire in a high school setting. But it ends up going some interesting places, and I was captivated throughout.

I started the first episode and Dylan (?) says, "why would you ask me that, that's a stupid question". Then a montage of him humping things. That sets the tone pretty well because that's as far as I got and will go.

  • Oh wow. I can see why it would not be to everyone's taste. But certainly, Dylan is not portrayed as a sympathetic character, even in the first episodes. Also, there is a pretty significant change in the tone as the show progresses.

It's interesting the "why would you ask me that" line jumped out at you because it's a significant moment in the show that pays off much later.
  • Ha. I guess I am the only one in the universe watching and enjoying this show. :P
  • There was another thread where I basically said I really enjoyed it, but that it is like most Netflix shows and a few episodes too long. I didn't even watch 6 and 7 and I'm pretty sure I know most that happens.
  • I really enjoyed it. I would agree that it may have been an episode or two longer than it needed to be, but I laughed throughout.

I am on episode 3 of this. I think you really need to be in the right mindset to watch this thing. Depending on my mood I will find it incredibly irritating or pretty awesome. I also don't think I could binge it. Its just not great viewed that way. (Which is fine, by the way, I don't think all shows should be binge'able)

  • I don't agree that it was too long. It's true they repeat some scenes, but mostly when they do that it's to show you the same event in a new context.  I thought they had several good twists in the later episodes, and also successfully shifted to a darker tone. Some of the scenes that initially seem frivolous end up taking on a deeper meeting.

Maybe I'm just the right demographic because I find these crime documentaries (e.g. Serial, Making of a Murderer. etc.) to be a little irritating, and deserving of parody.

Hahaha, that's exactly as far as I got!

I loved this show. Thought it would be nothing more than a joke but turned into a great whodunnit wih the right amount of laughs.
  • I also really enjoyed this. I love when a ridiculous premise is played completely seriously. It's just like Making a Murderer or Serial, but with more dick drawings, and by end, I really grew to care about these characters. Great show!
  • I binged this this weekend, and loved it. Hoping for a season 2. Loved how serious everyone took this premise.

  • I can see why people find this totally annoying and super lame. But I’m cracking up with it. It’s just a joke making a murderer made by teens with bad taste.
  • this shit is amazing. Cracking my top ten for sure, i sprinted through it last night.
