Yes, definitely. Rian Johnson & Lucasfilm had free rein to create a story for Luke within the context of his self-imposed isolation. They could have shown us exactly how & why Luke would do a complete 180 in his thinking about the force & its nature. In his love for Leia, Han & Ben. Not to mention his commitment to freedom for the galaxy from the Empire & First Order.
I mainly object to the implication that Luke had "one, brief moment" when he thought about killing Ben. Ben had not acted on his dark side thoughts & feelings. There was no emperor, enemy or threat in sight to prompt Luke to even consider reaching for his weapon.
