  • What are you binging right now?

We're watching Loki week to week and really enjoying it, but as far as binges go my wife and I have two going.

The better side of it is we're doing a wrap-around on Fringe (in essence we got all the way through and started right over), I fuckin love Fringe. One of my favorite cores of characters and I have nothing but the highest respect for the story management and for the most part, the writing in general. Fringe is amazing.

The lesser side of it is that we're working our way through Manifest. I am hooked into it, but a bit resentfully. I know my wife would drop out if I could let go of it, but god dammit I just have to know if they actually have a plan. I don't think they do, but I have to find out for sure. I fear it's Flash Forward and The Event (ironically, I don't believe the show actually knew what The Event meant) and the Following all over again. I hope I'm wrong and I will find out, but I don't have faith.
Additionally the dialog is pretty suspect and I really wish they had casted better. I believe that the concept is incredibly strong, but in a lot of cases they didn't get the caliber of performer that they needed and not nearly the pool of writing talent.
All that said, I am enjoying watching it. The concept truly is intriguing enough to forgive its shortcomings. It's also an interesting case because when and if they attend to land the plane, the effectiveness or lack thereof could swing every opinion of the show that I've formed very considerably. Also, credit where it is due, the show did "level up" between seasons 1 and 2. It is getting better.

  • What music are you streaming?

Hey man.  A few road trip themed tunes. Some definitely fit into the vibe you're creating better than others, to be sure.

    Pavement - Box Elder
    Herzog - Town to Town
Calexico - Crystal Frontier - Widescreen Version
Divine Fits - Flaggin a Ride
    Breeders - Drivin on 9
    CCR - Ramble Tamble
    Bowie - Suffragette City
Decemberists - The Island: Come and See, the Landlord's Daughter...
    GBV - Everywhere With Helicopter

I'm so bummed that Tall Tales and the Silver Lining pulled back some of their records from Spotify. There could be multiple great choices on The Understanding alone. They're really limited on YouTube as well (nothing from my favorite record), but here are a couple for fun because Trevor is one of literally the nicest people I've ever met and I've always really dug their stuff and it has a nice "dusty highway" feel.

Ok here is my sw roadtrip playlist so far and I’d like to now shamelessly ask for some recommendations cause I know we got some tasty takes here. And it’d make me smile on the road when a great tune comes on someone suggested that I never thought of.

Hey buddy! Just seeing this now, getting off of work, but I'm 100% going to chime in on this tomorrow.

    Cheers!

  • What is your most mundane celebrity encounter?

OK, I think I have one for the books here. So, my wife was having a procedure in Santa Monica so to kill time and grab a couple of things I went to the Target in Westwood, parked down the street from it (there is a why, but it's not terribly interesting). Anyhoo, there was a Trader Joes near where I parked and I get out of my car overhearing this dude saying to a woman passing by "...you know the Somebody's Watching Me song? That was me. I did other stuff too..." The woman was walking away from him, clearly not interested but I walked up and said "Dude, are you Rockwell?" Shortening an already long story. We talked for a few minutes, Rockwell had fallen on hard times and asked me for a couple bucks on the street. I gave him a 5er and we both went about our day.

I accept that there is a coin flip chance that it wasn't him, but I googled a more recent picture and it looked like him so I'm counting it.

He recently-ish (last year?  maybe the year before?) beat a woman with a chair because he owed her money and she asked him to pay her, so it wouldn't surprise me if he's in need of a fiver.
Well, that's not great. It does certainly make sense, but the thought of the "Somebody's Watching Me" guy as a dude who would beat a woman with a chair is a super bummer. That's horrifying. It does make some sense of some things though.

Are you sure it was him? You got me looking him up and I didn’t know it as a kid but you know who his daddy is? Man this guy had to fall hard to be on the streets with that sort of family. But families can suck so all things are possible.

I dig you bringing Ghost Dog back

Ha! I was pretty scared of it too when I was a kid. Glad I'm not alone.

I'm not certain. It was such a random, weird deal that I've basically decided to claim it despite uncertainty. I did an image search later that day and it did look like him, but I can't be sure. I had no idea that his dad was so successful, but you hear all the time about people blowing through fortunes and ending up destitute. I just kind of chalked it up to that, particularly with him being a one-hit wonder.

Thanks about Ghost Dog. If it's not my favorite of my Microsoft Paint "creations" it's right up there.
